I don't see why they don't just upgrade signs at bus shelters.
Some of these freestandng ones are in more prominent locations (ie higher revenue), but their placement is the source of the problem.

They are doing this as well. The bus shelter outside of Tiffany on Burrard near Georgia was recently upgraded. It requires digging and installation of power.

Thanks.
That makes sense, though most already have lighting.

Interesting how the article points out the huge number of hotel rooms that have been lost. Even with the new ones that have been added.

According to the City of Vancouver, over the past decade, the gains from the construction of 1,457 new hotel rooms were erased by 2,562 hotel room conversions and demolitions. This includes the closure of low-end properties such as the Pacific Palisades Hotel (233 rooms), Coast Plaza Hotel (199 rooms), Empire Landmark Hotel (357 rooms), and Quality Inn Downtown (157 rooms).

Of the 23,000 hotel rooms that currently exist in Metro Vancouver, 57% are located within Vancouver. This amounts to 13,925 rooms in the city, down from 15,030 in 2008.

All while we are experiencing record tourism numbers. Makes no sense other than redeveloping these lots just being more lucrative. Same with gas stations disappearing. High real estate prices affect everything.

Good point, there is a shift in the industry too, probably affecting the low-mid/ mid price point, which the closed hotels (being older properties) may have occupied.

Why the heck are the two signs different sizes?
EDIT - To match the width of the window below? => designer being too pedantic.
Would have looked better with 2 even larger signs unrelated to window size.

I was just wondering the same thing. I wondered if it might be an optical illusion.

Love seeing some large murals like that in downtown Vancouver! Montreal has a number of them in its downtown and they really liven up the blank walls of mid-rises.
