I have no idea when I'll be able to ride it. Moving to Halifax for a Master's in Urban Planning at Dalhousie September 1st, so probably won't be able to try the train for a looooong time.

Rode the Barcelona Metro all week. There are many different Alstom trainsets in service on their different lines. They have a pretty epic and relatively low cost system, I guess pretty typical for a such a dense city with quite high low income and poverty rates. That being said, it seems like everyone uses public transit there. Also notable is that all of their doors seem to be functioning properly....maybe a sign of things to come for Ottawa?

Any inside scoop on how well the trial running is going? The latest email update indicated it started on Monday, July 29. Have they had to reset the timer?

At least once so far. Presumably, more than once.

I think they cut service so short on Sunday because they need the time for maintenance hours, and they will rarely need the capacity of the trains.

Given how through and complex the test suite sounds, Corvulpes might not know. Depends on how much info is shared internally, I suppose.

That's the thing. What on the surface may seem like a failure, might actually be a test (fake the software to cause something to not work).

Agreed. It can also work the other way: what seems like a successful day could actually be a failure because of sone back end problem that wasn't apparent to the guys on the ground.

The city did say that there wouldn't be regular updates during, so there's that. If there were no restarts at all, the testing will conclude at EOD Friday August 9, so by that weekend we should be hearing something.

Not good. Expect the 12 day process to restart by next Monday if it hasn't already. The system has not been achieving minimum frequencies during peak periods - not even close.

Can't say much more than that.

Haha. I wish I would be invited to ride too. I'm in the same mindset on that.

Hoping the testing does not need to restart many times so that we can all get on the rails.

One thing we should remember is that they are not only running a trial of regular and peak service, but also a multitude of scenarios (which may appear visually to be breakdowns or issues). We won't know anything until things are done. But in the event they don't make August 16th I'm sure we will hear something to that effect very shortly after.

One final note, we have to be careful how we assess the progress, as just a week ago there was discussions that Substantial Completion wouldn't be accepted and then a day later it was by both the city and the certifier.

Hoping for a quick and successful test phase.

As I was walking downtown I went to check on those famous ventilation grills to see if could here any trains passing underneath. It was around 10:30pm so I did not hear anything but what marked me was the smell coming out of the vent. What chocked me was how similar the smell was to Montreal's Metro.
If ever you've went to Montreal, you probably noticed that the Metro has a signature smell that you noticed as soon as you get close/inside a station. Well it was the same exact same one coming from the vent.
Does anybody have an explanation, or that's just characteristic to most Metro ?

Probably just a mixture of train brake dust and a bit of ozone from the occasional spark.

While I do have doubts they'd hit the 9th, an interesting part of the process is it has immediate remediation steps as part of the process, so there has to be at least a chance of success by the 16th.

For those who haven't heard the trains though the subway grates downtown, O-Train Fans posted a 20 second video on Twitter.

Noticed doubles running today. Weren't they planning to run singles on weekends? Don't they need to test uncoupling and schedule changes for weekend service?

they don't need to run a schedule based off of real world dates. Could be doing a test of thrusday, even though it's sunday.

Is everyone forgetting the many times it was stated that there will be times during the testing that trains are running less frequently than you'd expect, or even not running at all?

Exactly. They aren’t simulating 12 days of operation. They are running 12 days of specified tests. The reset is to ensure that the fix for one problem doesn’t break something else that had previously been tested.
