Yeah. It would be nice to twin the 50. Maybe in the way NY state twinned Highway 17 I think to create "Future Interstate 86" It is a pretty high risk of head on collisions.

That's correct. As a result there aren't any more at-grade intersections on A-50.

Except of course the traffic light where the highway actually starts at Montcalm in downtown Gatineau (Hull).

It’s worth wondering how it figures on MTQ’s priority list though. With major projects like Turcot Interchange, A19, A35 and A85 yet to be completed, I really don’t know how far down the list Widening A50 would be.

Also, the barrier on the 2-lane section of A50 was added recently too. I don’t remember seeing them when I went in Winter 2016.

CAQ not ready to fund Highway 50 widening
Work on undivided highway still needs more planning, minister says
CBC News · Posted: Mar 12, 2019 11:28 AM ET | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

The Coalition Avenir Québec's minister for the Outaouais says his government hasn't been able to move as fast as they'd like to widen a key connection between Montreal and Gatineau.

During the election campaign that saw them seize power for the first time, the CAQ promised to "champion" widening Highway 50 to make it more safe.

Families of crash victims urge Quebec to move faster on Highway 50 widening
However, not a single dollar of the CAQ's $160-million Outaouais road plan for 2019 to 2021 will go toward that work, Papineau MNA Mathieu Lacombe said Monday.

He said the plans are still being drawn up and the government isn't ready to set money aside.

"Lots of things have been said, but the planning and moving ahead [of the project] may not have been as advanced as [the previously governing] Liberals suggested," Lacombe said in a French-language interview.

"We're committed to transparency when giving a timeline, and that's why I want to say that there are still certain administrative barriers that stop us from going as fast as we'd like."

In the short term, Lacombe said, the only safety improvements drivers may notice is a new barrier between the east and west lanes of Highway 50 near Buckingham in east Gatineau, where it currently narrows.

That seven-kilometre stretch could be widened starting in late 2020, but that work would be funded separately.

Alonzo-Wright Bridge work in 2021
Of the $160 million in the Outaouais road plan, half is going to pavement maintenance.

Nearly $50 million will be spent on inspections, and the rest — about $30 million — will go to improving the security and efficiency of the road network through projects like culvert repairs.

Another major infrastructure project, widening the Alonzo-Wright Bridge connecting La Vérendrye Boulevard and Highway 105 in Gatineau, is expected to start in 2021.

Yea what a bummer. So much for taking out the liberals in the election last October.

Meanwhile, https://www.ledroit.com/actualites/justi...ections-1722c50d5b55accc9fe069f7d252eba3

One lane in each direction will be closed for installation of anti-flooding barriers from A-5 to Draveurs bridge.

Same thing for the highway 35 (Montreal to Boston)
which still ends up in the middle of nowhere, 25km from the US border.

that is such a short distance! I can't believe they don't finish that.

that being said, autoroute 10 to 55 to US 91 already exists and is a fairly direct route to Boston. I've taken this route to Boston before and its a great drive

I wonder whether it’s because turning Route 185 into A85 in Bas Saint Laurent has sucked up too much money, $0.9B in total.

Driver suffers life-threatening injuries in Highway 50 crash near Thurso

A man in his 20s suffered life-threatening injuries Friday morning when an eastbound vehicle crossed a median on Quebec’s Highway 50 and crashed into a westbound tractor trailer.

The Sûreté du Québec said the crash occurred at about 9:45 a.m. near Lochaber, about 60 km east of Ottawa.

Highway 50 remains closed in both directions between the Doherty Road and Thurso exits.

Detours have been set up. The SQ had no estimate as to when the highway might reopen.

It was the second major crash on the highway in 12 hours.

Thursday night, a minivan crossed the median near the Ange-Gardien exit and smashed head-on into a vehicle with four people on board.

There were five injuries, two of them serious. However, police did not believe any of the injuries were life-threatening.

I drove this highway 2 weeks ago from Montebello. It was very crowded all the way to and from.

I agree. Over the long weekend, I drove on it to get to Montréal and to show my friends the view. It was a stressful drive. Never doing it again until it’s completely 4-laned.

A 25-year-old man is dead following a collision on Highway 50 near Thurso, Que., Friday morning.

The Sûreté du Québec said the crash happened at about 9:45 a.m. in the westbound lanes between Buckingham and Thurso.

An eastbound vehicle, driven by the young man, crossed the centre line and ran into a tractor-trailer, police said.

No one else was injured, police said.

The highway was expected to reopen around 4 p.m.

Five people were also injured, two seriously, in another crash further west on Highway 50 near L'Ange Gardien, Que., at around 11 p.m. Thursday.

The views are better but it is much slower than 417. I went to the Laurentides a few weeks ago and from the Byward Market it was an hour and 45 minutes early on a Saturday to the 15. This is about how long it takes me to the 15 and the 40 so even from Gatineau to Laval I’d lose time and add a lot of stress and danger.

Maybe instead of going to Mont Tremblant, we can just treat A50 as a 159-km long ski way.

I can't recall any highway project funded by the Feds in recent years (bridges excluded). Isn't it purely provincial jurisdiction?

Well that's frustrating. Somehow they are selling it as a public transport project:

Quote:
"Selon le ministre Champagne, le prolongement de l'autoroute 19 permettra de créer un lien « efficace » de transport collectif, de réduire la congestion sur le réseau et de diminuer le temps de déplacement pour les usagers de la route.

Le nouveau tronçon aura trois voies par direction, dont une réservée aux autobus, au covoiturage et aux véhicules électriques. Le projet prévoit aussi la construction d’un nouveau pont, d’un stationnement incitatif et d’un terminus d’autobus."
