I read in a report (have to find the link) that they just planned on re-introducing the fourth gate that was originally built into concourse B in 1986. Concourse A was built in 1988 as a temporary structure for Horizon. There wasn't any more detail on what changes are planned for A. I suppose they'll just extend B a little, and it'll be the new A? The E-175 jets are (mostly?) replacing the Q400 props for Alaska/Horizon. So as Alaska spreads out over Concourse C, in place of Southwest, perhaps they're planning on parking those jets at the gates more, rather than walk-up boarding that the props require. I'd imagine they'd be expanding B further in the future.

I'm really curious to see where they plan on parking all those Alaska flights as A is demolished. They say they'll move to the end of C, but... Southwest isn't moving for another year at least. Hmm.

I took Southwest a month ago and boarded at the end of the D Concourse. It appeared Southwest was using a couple gates down there. Not sure if this is new or not since I don't fly with them much. The return flight deplaned in the C Concourse.

If Concourse A is going away altogether, will the remaining concourses be relettered, or will they just leave well enough alone to avoid confusion?

Kinda of like JFK where it's Terminals 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8. Three and 6 are were demolished and the remaining terminals never renumbered.

This PDF has all the latest info:
https://popcdn.azureedge.net/pdfs/PDX%20...posed%20Development%20January%202019.pdf

Basically, concourse A goes away. B becomes a two level structure with small plane gates at the end.

Horizon moves to the end of C for now. Keep in mind that American doesn't use all that much and there are a number of common use port owned gates down there too. It will all fit.

Yeah I guess they'll get creative with plane parking. It seems all the gates are full early in the morning. But there seems to be room on D concourse much of the time, so that will probably be used. Still, there are so many Horizon flights that currently utilize A, it'll be interesting how they juggle.

A new PDF of the PPT presented to the advisory committee show the initial floor plans of the upgraded terminal. And a rendering of the giant rental car facility.

It's going to be transformative for sure! The main terminal building looks like it would double in size. Perhaps by eating into the C and D Concourses?

The rental car parking garage...I mean, it's better to be centrally located than spread out on lots up to a couple miles away. But it's a BIG garage. I'm curious how passengers will access the new building?

Yeah I don't know that it's walkable from the terminal, unless they put in a ped tunnel?

It does seem like the terminal expansion would eat into a gate or two on the inner C & D concourses. But adding 6 gates on E next year will likely eliminate any capacity problems, at least for a while.

Airport: MAKING SOUTHWEST AT HOME
Joseph Gallivan Tuesday, May 28, 2019
Portland architect Michelle Vo and her team's dream design for Portland International Airport's Concourse E.

Anyone driving to the airport will have noticed a new structure going up on the north side of Airport Way.

The long, low building is an extension to Concourse E, expanded to fit Southwest Airlines gates. However, what might look like a simple strip of building is much more complicated.

And its roots are in a young woman's dream.

"A long time ago, over 20 years ago now, when I first got out of graduate school at SCI-Arc I Los Angeles, I made a list of projects I was dreaming of doing," said Michelle Vo. She's a principal at Hennebery Eddy and is the project manager for the Terminal Balancing and Concourse E Extension project, to give it its official name.

"I'm a goals person. So, I made this list and it was schools, fire stations and airports. And I still have that piece of paper." (She used ink on graph paper.)

As a young architect in L.A. Vo worked on K-12 schools for five years and then, missing the northwest, she moved to Portland. She had just worked on a fire station in Los Angeles and luckily Hennebery Eddy Architects in Portland also had some fire station work going on, so she hit the ground running.

Hennebery Eddy was soon placed on a "small works roster" at the Port of Portland, which manages the marine ports and airports including PDX. This means they were one of three architects for which the Port saved small jobs. Vo got started on her dream: a bunch of lockers in an employee break room, and then a 30-foot corridor with a room for lifts. (That is what it sounds like, a room for storing scissor lifts.) It wasn't exactly Idlewild, but it taught her a lot about the complexity of airports — and she loves complexity.

Asked if an architect was really necessary for a corridor and a shed, Vo replies, "The Port of Portland takes all of their work very seriously. They do things right. They're not the kind of agency that's just going to go cowboy something up."

She loved the job, and the way the Port worked. "It's a process that they have there. It can frustrate some creative people because you have to do things by these rules. But all of those rules and all that process made a lot of sense. And it was super complicated. There was a lot going on."

Minnesota airline ready to launch SA nonstop flights to Portland
By W. Scott Bailey – Senior Reporter, San Antonio Business Journal
Jun 4, 2019, 12:50pm CDT Updated a day ago

Travelers looking to connect between San Antonio and Portland, Oregon, will have another option beginning this week.

Sun Country Airlines plans a celebratory launch of seasonal nonstop service between San Antonio International and Portland International airports on June 5. The initial flight is scheduled to depart the Alamo City at 9:15 p.m.

San Antonio officials had identified Portland as one of the most unserved markets for San Antonio. The round-trip flights will be available on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays. One way fares start at $89.

Ted Botimer, chief commercial officer for Sun Country, said San Antonio is a “good fit” for the carrier as it seeks markets ripe for expanded air service.

Screen Door, Tillamook to open new outposts at Portland’s airport

Posted Jul 9, 11:00 AM

By Andrew Theen | The Oregonian/OregonLive

It’s about to get even easier to acquire a food coma before waddling onto a plane in Portland.

Screen Door, the popular Portland Southern comfort food restaurant with its notoriously long lines at its location on East Burnside Street, is opening an outpost at Portland International Airport in 2021.

The Port of Portland, which owns and operates PDX, announced on Tuesday that Screen Door was expected to open an outpost that would serve breakfast all day long at the airport in the 2021. The port’s board must first approve the lease negotiations on Wednesday with Screen Door and eight other new food or retail locations in two different concourses.

Screen Door, Tillamook and a new “women in aviation” themed bar named Juliett from Portland bar purveyors Lightning Bar Collective, headline the new list of potential airport attractions.

Screen Door and Good Coffee will open locations in Concourse B as part of forthcoming renovations scheduled to finish in spring 2021. Seven other bars, restaurants or retail shops, are expected to open in the new extension of Concourse E set to be completed in summer 2020.

The airport already has 68 shops and restaurants, including outposts from well-known brands like Stumptown Coffee Roasters, The Country Cat, Deschutes Brewery, Nike, Columbia Sportswear and Hollywood Theatre.

According to the port, the new locations will bring 254 new jobs to the airport. Thirty different businesses submitted applications for the new retail and restaurant spots.

PDX named top U.S. airport for 7th straight year by Travel + Leisure magazine
By Andrew Theen | The Oregonian/OregonLive | Posted July 10, 2019 at 12:40 PM | Updated July 10, 2019 at 12:41 PM

They like us.

They really, really, really, really, really, really, really like us.

Travel + Leisure magazine on Wednesday named Portland International Airport as its top domestic airport.

This is the seventh consecutive year PDX took home the top ranking. According to the magazine, readers cast their votes for their favorite aerial hubs each year. Airports are ranked based on access, check-in, security, shopping, design and restaurant and bar options.
