MLS averages a lot more than 10K/game. Last season the average was 21,873. Atlanta with their amazing new stadium averaged 53,002. Most MLS stadiums I believe are 20K to 30K but built and designed exclusively for soccer. CalgaryNEXT would have been a perfect facility to try and attract a team. A non-covered stadium would never work b/c the weather here is too unpredictable. We definitely need a new stadium. With a covered facility we could attract a lot more events. Spending a ton of money to put band-aids on McMahon is a huge waste.

Totally agree. I don't understand people's objections to getting a new stadium, and the argument that the CFL is an old person's game or whatever is a dumb argument by people who can't think outside the box, and have no thought for the future.

Without a facility suitable for soccer in our climate probably zero. But getting a team would help to justify having a new stadium.

Nashville's expansion team which is to start play next year is getting a 27,500 soccer-specific stadium built for them. It looks great in renderings. When you see some of the stadiums MLS teams are getting CalgaryNEXT makes a lot of sense. It's really unfortunate that Nenshi and his gang were so against that proposal.

Should be smaller given they can't even fill the current one. Most of the complaints have been around the ever increasing prices being implemented by the CSEC.

Yeah - it's amazing. Tax breaks for the billionaire owners are already responsible for a good chunk of the drastic property tax increases on other businesses over the last number of years. Now the same people who complain about increases to business property tax for non-exempt non-billionaires are wanting to give even more concessions. Calgary businesses cannot take any more of this. The same billionaire owners just received a 1/3rd tax break from Kenney provincially recently, and the back is breaking on the low and middle income earners.

A new arena, new stadium and a new field house for $890 million was a great deal. Now the City wants to spend $600 million just on the arena and $200 million + on the field house which leaves band-aid "fixes" for outdated McMahon Stadium. Once again Nenshi and his gang have no idea what they're doing when it comes to mega projects. To make matters worse they want to have fuck up a major road to have a level LRT crossing. It's like they're out to cause as much damage as they can before they get booted from office.

It was a $2B dollar project including land and all of the municipal tax concessions the Flames billionaires wanted. How badly do you want to screw over the business community in Calgary by making all other businesses cover for the taxes the Flames billionaires don't want to pay? On the one hand you complain about the weight of municipal property tax on businesses, but on the other you want even bigger hand outs to the billionaires. $2 billion? That was a grossly inflated figure administration pulled out of their butts to make the project look bad.

Given the City's track record on providing truthful and accurate estimates for major projects I'll believe the Flames before I believe them.

As for the creosote cleanup, the province should be stepping in and doing whatever it takes to make the company responsible for the mess pay. But wasn't/isn't the City willing to pay if it helps to kickstart the development they want in the area?
