Excellent example.

You can see from the construction photos of Modello how the podium has an entirely almost column free floor layout in the interior spaces (not surprisingly used for office space) since most of the mass of the slabs and the structure is being carried by the structural concrete skin....






Other than some slab band and transfer beams on the ground floor with a few columns the entire podium structure is supported by the concrete on the skin.

Easier to pull off with a podium of a few floors (and in an office use-type structure).

Much harder and trickier to do with the main stem of a 40-50 storey residential highrise tower where high wind shear forces, seismic considerations and seismic bracing come into play.

Additionally, in Modello, I imagine having that heavy concrete skin structure on the podium level facing the skytrain line helps cut down some of the noise from the trains passing by every so frequently.
And you're not really losing that much in terms of views being lost from less window and visibility opening area.

Leaving for work 7am, the heavy lift crane was setup and ready for the raising of the tower crane ^

Got home at 5:30pm and packing things up.

I would of like to have seen it in action.

Interesting. I went by just after 2:00 PM and took some pics. If you look close there are two crane stems today. I think they disassembled the original crane and repositioned it. Look at this first pic below from May 30. The crane is closer to the alley. The new crane is closer to Hornby Street.

It might make sense to just leave the old stem in place. When they have to raise the current crane they would just have to reach over and grab the pieces.

The new stem is braced to the tower with a square collar, I'm thinking the new segments will be fed from the bottom after a lifting frame makes a gap for it. We'll have to take notice next time it's raised.

This might be the most prominent tower in Vancouver once finished.

The size of it and the prominence of the concrete exterior facade at this height is already intense.

Add another 30 floors and wow!

Driving over Burrard Bridge, it's a lot wider than I expected, so yeah, it'll be in your face prominent.

That's actually wild to consider, that the average height Vancouver tower still needs to be built on top of whats already here.

This thing will stand out. Wow!

It must be structural. While I imagine it shoulders vertical load as well, the grid most certainly provides sheer strength for the tower.

Yep this one is going to be very prominent, especially from English Bay

Note the grid pattern now seen on the north side of the tower as seen below from Hornby Street. Also, more glass all over.
