Not really sure where to put this, or if any would find it interesting, but it's a story about why so many mid-rise buildings look the same. Somehow I missed the memo that the Burnside Delta ditched the red paneling for a lot of gray. Kinda disappointed.

Funny that you would bring this up. A year or so ago, I chatted with Don Vallaster on NW Couch near his new building on NW 9th across from Pearl Bakery. At that time he was on the Design Commission (maybe he still is...), so I complained that the Commission was approving too many charcoal gray buildings, which of course describes his NW 9th & Couch building.....dark gray with some orange touches to break up the depressing effect. Vallaster simply responded that it was a current trend which he was disinclined to discourage. Only Design Commission member Tad Savinar was resisting the charcoal gray trend.

So now you report that Vallaster's Burnside Delta has ended up the same! We should cry Basta! and urge designers to select materials that brighten our dark winter days.

That is very disappointing.

I don't recall Burnside Delta ever being approved as red. Red window framing and balconies maybe but it was always grey.

The original proposal was for metal tread plate cladding, which was then changed to TAKTL concrete panels, but it was always grey (with red accents).

LOL! You are so right, when red was mentioned my mind turned it red. I just looked at the rendering on NextPortland to remind myself of the actual. I think I was mixing this and the Delta into one building in my mind. http://www.nextportland.com/2017/07/14/306-se-8th-ave/

Huh, must have embellished it in my head. I thought it was going to be much more exciting. It just kinda blends in with the winter sky.

It seems a plain and uninspired building for such a visible, dramatic location.

Of course I thought that about the Linden too.

When the East bridgehead is done, I wonder how many really good, interesting buildings we'll have gotten out of it.

Thanks for posting these. I see they've tweaked the design a bit, introducing "clipped corners". I'm not a fan. They just look like an added expense, and opportunity for more leaks if the detailing's not perfect.

To be approved, can BDS require they include vegetation to match renderings? Even if just seasonally? Not to get into a debate here, but it seems like if the vegetation was growing from the Yard's balconies like in some renderings, it would blunt the impact of the tower. Seems like I've seen a few renderings with vegetation that didn't make it into the final product.

The above DAR is interesting, but might not be as eye catching without an ability/plan to grow vegetation to match the rendering.

Prosper Portland tees up more new development in Lents

With four projects all wrapped up for the first phase of Lents Town Center, Prosper Portland is turning its focus to the next round of development in the neighborhood.

At its meeting this week, Prosper Portland’s board of commissioners will consider giving Executive Director Kimberly Branam the go-ahead to negotiate agreements that would pave the way for three potential projects on nearly 5 acres that the city owns on Southeast 92nd Avenue.

One would be a 244-unit apartment complex with a mix of affordable and market rate housing, while another would be the redevelopment of existing buildings known as the Bakery Blocks into a neighborhood commercial center with a public plaza, neighborhood tool library and renovated commercial spaces.
