Edit: The cheapest option (one-year membership) is similar to the Y or GL. It just goes up from there.
Not sure if there's enough demand.

These are relatively successful in larger centers, though. I know people who have memberships at places like this. I know even more people that pay a fortune for yoga too, even though you can also do that at the Y.

When it comes to fitness, finding something you enjoy and will actually do is just as important as price.

People with deeper pockets ($3000+) are buying Peloton bikes now - it's a spin bike with a tv screen to follow workouts by the same company.

The interior fit-up for Rens Pets in Champlain Plaza has begun. I imagine that this means opening will likely be sometime in the next month.

There is chatter on another site that Justice will actually be located in the le Grenier space at the Mapleton Centre. I just noticed that le Grenier has recently closed, so perhaps this is the case.

There are now three vacancies in Building "D" in the Mapleton Centre (le Grenier, Pop Shoes & Wicker Emporium). It's good to see a popular store like Justice occupying one of the spaces. Hopefully the other two will fill up shortly.

EDIT - a rumour no more..........

It was confirmed on AllNovaScotia today that SpinCo is taking the end unit at 1690 Mountain Road where 9Round was located. The franchise is being run by Ali Manship, John Manship's daughter.

Thanks. Given the financial backing of the Manships, I don't think we will have to worry about access to start-up capital.

Exterior work on the facade today. If I were a betting man, I would say signage will be going up within the week.

Update on HBC: May close stores.

https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/no-sacred-co...retailer-weighs-store-closures-1.1282563

This would infer that a NB store is currently not in the picture.

Unless they're solely selling fair trade clothes, Justice is a pretty crass name for a clothing retailer.

I have given up any hope of a return of HBC to NB.

If it were to have happened, it would have occurred when Sears vacated CF Champlain. The mall (probably wisely) repurposed the space for the TD Corporate Offices instead. They now have a stable long term lessee with 1100 employees who use services elsewhere in the mall - smart move.

If HBC were to set up in Moncton now, they would have to build an addition on the mall. I doubt this is going to happen.

HBC is in serious trouble. It sounds like they are going to close (or downsize) a lot of their stores in secondary markets. They have two stores in NS. I doubt that the Sydney store will survive. Even the Micmac Mall store could be in trouble. I'm sure HBC would like to remain in the market, but Micmac is now definitely the poor cousin to Halifax Shopping Centre. Maybe HBC would consider decamping to Halifax Shopping Centre to fill the vacant Sears space there? I wouldn't be at all surprised if overtures haven't been already made.

I found this quote from the article interesting:

Quote:
Bay store closures could add to the growing glut of department store space across the country. Seventy-seven per cent of Sears Canada’s store portfolio remains vacant, according to brokerage CBRE Ltd. And more than three years after Target’s exit from Canada, nearly 22 per cent of its store portfolio remains vacant
Think about that for a minute - 77% of Sears Canada former portfolio remains vacant!!!

If that is not an indication of the retail apocalypse in this country, then I don't know what is............

I'm not really surprised about HBC struggling and closing stores. Big department stores don't seem to do very well nowadays.
It's very sad to see retailers struggling and have no choice but to close down some (or all) of their stores.

And wow 77% of former Sears properties remains vacant!! At least the former Sears at McAllister Place here in SJ is currently under redevelopment (accommodating a number of large-format retailers). And Regent Mall in Fredericton should be starting the redeveloping of theirs soon.

I've been to HBC/The Bay in Moncton, Sydney, Saskatoon, and Ottawa. In the larger/wealthier markets, it looks more like a premium department store - a bit more like a Nordstrom or a Saks. It had a distinct slightly-more-expensive-Sears feel for me when it was still in Moncton.

I think the premium model can be profitable for a department store in 2019, but it's not the kind of thing Moncton could support.

Signage is up form Ren's Pets
(Photo is from Retail Talk and Share group on Facebook)

Also, according to the recently updated site plans, they list a future 20,500sq.ft space next to Ren's Pets.

So, a "food court" basically limits this to CF Champlain. I wonder if this is going in the main food court, or are we talking about the old Gelato place across from the Sobeys store (which is still vacant).

With Thai Express coming to CF Champlain, I wonder if Ruby Thai will remain in the food court or will they pack it in. It's hard to imagine two Thai places making a go of it at Champlain Place. Maybe the new sushi place will be a replacement for Ruby Thai..........

Here is a list of "Asian cuisine franchise" available in Canada.
https://www.cfa.ca/franchisecanada/asian-cuisine-franchises-across-canada/

If I were a betting man, I would wonder about Bento Sushi or Edo Japan.............

I know that Yuzu Sushi, a Quebec based franchise was also looking at the Moncton market and are expanding lately. Might be another possibility.

That's an even more likely possibility, especially since they are already infiltrating into northern NB. Good thought!!

Lot's of earth moving going on for Phase 1 of the Granite Centre out by Costco. Still no new indication of tenants beyond the already confirmed Starbucks and Mickey D's.

Does anyone have any news on the Home Home Hardware sing that popped up at the Granite Center. Does it mean they are going to start on construction soon. Also does anyone have rumors of what could possibly be setting up shop in phase 1 except McDonadls and Starbucks?
