I'm honestly surprised at the whole thing. The drive from Young/Eglington to Guelph took little more than an hour on Sunday.

OK so yesterday trying to get to Cambridge I fucked up even more than on Monday. Let's just say after ending up at the airport and passing yet another "City of Guelph" sign I finally parked somewhere and took the time to learn how to use the truck's GPS system. The problem was that for some reason I kept thinking the 401 was south of Cambridge, and exiting to the right instead of to the left. The GPS telling me to use off-ramps that were closed wasn't helping. Also the total lack of geological markers (lakes or mountains) doesn't help. Back home or in Toronto, I've got a geographic reference point. In Guelph, it's small enough and I've driven around enough that I now know my way around quite well. But Waterloo Region? The only redeeming factor in the roads there is the traffic light timing is amazing.

Yeah, I just drove that at 140km/hr and then slowed down to 110 after realizing how fucked I'd be if I got caught. It was easy to drive that fast; I was still lagging behind the car in front of me.

Yes.

I did eventually make it to Cambridge, and got some photos around Galt and then met a friend who works for GRT to show me around downtown Kitchener and Waterloo at night. We ended at a strip mall near University of Waterloo that has a couple dozen fast food places in it. I went back to Kitchener today both in the early morning (for about 10 minutes before I had to go back to Guelph) and in the evening, to photograph a handful of things I saw while we were there, but I didn't get to Waterloo before it became too dark and cloudy. It was a beautiful morning but I spent all of it inside doing work.

Tomorrow I finish my course and I'm on holiday until Sunday, I'll be going to Hamilton tomorrow night but I'm not sure what I'll be able to photograph if it's raining too much. Friday, depending on weather, I'll either do more Hamilton or go to Niagara to see the falls. I may or may not stop in St. Catharines. I've been going to cities just because they're there so far but eventually time will be an issue. I'd like to go to Brantford but they tore it down so what's the point.

Nice, now I hope they catch the jerk who caused an accident on the 410 the other day. For anyone who hasn't seen, a guy in a black ford focus hatchback is speeding in the HOV lane, passes another car illegally, then brake checks/hits them and the other car spins out and crashes while the guy drives away.

That's nothing new for a holiday Monday. If you got to Barrie without stopping or slowing down significantly, you did really well.

That really resonates with me.
I’m well aware of counterarguments to follow, but 6 lanes on 401 + 2 lanes on 7, versus 4 lanes each, it’s gonna be a total of 8 lanes anyway. What’s the difference?

Plus, places like Perth in the east, and Norwood and Havelock near Peterborough have quite a bit of traffic anyway.

Never mind, the construction site’s indeed been pushed northward to Stouffeville Road. I feel that nothing’s going on between Highway 7 and 16th Avenue though. Perhaps MTO wanna wait for Buttonville Airport to be decommissioned, replace the overpasses of 16th Avenue and the bridge over beaver creek and reconfigure the 16th Avenue interchange (with its widening to 6 lanes*) in conjunction with adding an HOV lane each direction?

* Obviously this is municipal work but MTO needs to know in advance whether or not to save space. On that note, I hope the Highway 7 overpass replacement in the far future will allow YRT to add an extra viva lane.

The bit from Highway 7 northerly to 16th Avenue was tendered as a second contract. The contract closed a month or so, so construction will start in the next few weeks/months.

I see they are dismantling a large rock outcrop on Hwy 17 a little east of the Veuve River Picnic Area, east of Sudbury.

Straightening out the highway or just adding more clearance?

They're improving the geometry of the road, so they'll be re-aligning it.

I’m curious: How will MTO “extend 410 northwest of Mayfield Road” to meet GTA West Toll Road? I can imagine a trumpet interchange between Highway 410 new and the current alignment which leads to Highway 10 with a unidirectional interchange with Mayfield Road (northbound exit and southbound entrance only), but can anything else be done?

Ps: Will it be a waste to completely take down the current alignment between Mayfield Road and Hurontario Street after GTA West Corridor and Highway 410 new are built?

If 10G's picked, that means MTO should eliminate every at-grade intersection from the current end of 410 to GTA West Highway then.
