You are also assuming that they can build on the baseball diamond. Full-sized diamonds are few and far between, and very hard to replace.

we've had this conversation before. They could add Jasmine station right before the flyover by removing the pocket track between the two main tracks. The site where Costco was supposed to go (the heck happened with that anyway) could support TOD with an integrated station at the back.

The distance between Blair and "Jasmine" isn't as attractive (about 600 meters) and the high density, low income Jasmine Crescent isn't as well served, but it is still possible.

Orleans Town Centre, they don't seem to have left any space for that one. Even Tenth Line, it's supposed to go a few hundred meters east of the bridge. What we see under the bridge looks more like the tracks splitting to avoid the bridges support column then space for a station.

There has been a lot of construction activity there lately. It looks like there putting in sewage/drainage and preparing the site. Looks like something must be going in there. Not sure if it will be a Costco or something else?

They seem to be leveling the land at the south-east corner of the Montréal Road-174 intersection. Wonder if that's where they will build the new overpass and station.

LRT Stage 2 alignment

Confederation Line East.

Let me put the alignment alternative to rest.

The fundamental philosophy must be that vehicular lanes must be kept separate from the LRT. By keeping them independent then they can be built and then maintained without impacting each other.

Between Blair and the NCC overpass, there median is much too narrow and will require moving the east/west bound lanes. The cost of this versus moving the hydro would be similar however moving the hydro pole would have no impact to existing commuters. There would be a very big safety issue as people driving eastbound at night would have the bright light of the LRT facing you coming westbound. Also, should maintenance be required on the LRT, it would be completely separate from the 174.

Having the LRT on the north or south side would free up the existing bus lane and thus create a third lane between Place D'Orleans and Blair - this is a very big bonus.

Given these facts, the LRT must not go in the median.

you're way to late for this. It's alignment is final, and has been for years. Also i'd imagine lights in the LRV are adjustable, and can be lowered as to not interfere with the vision of drivers on the 174, that or you have a physical barrier blocking the light from escaping the median.

Also, these vehicles are designed to run in mixed traffic, so headlight can’t be all that blinding to drivers.

Having the LRT north of the 174 would also increase costs significantly as they would have to tunnel under all of the on and off ramps to/from the 174 westbound (plus the build a separate overpass). In the median they can use the existing overpass and avoid all the ramps.

The median is the easiest and cheapest way to Orleans. No matter where you build it, the vast majority of its usage will be at rush-hour, so why bother spending hundreds of millions, if not billions, for any other route? More for our money.

As for safety or comfort concerns regarding the median (blinding lights, noise, grime from the highway spraying onto the stations and tracks), this is a model used in many other cities across the world, including Toronto and Calgary. I had asked the forumers from Calgary about it, and they have say they've had no issues. If anything, Ottawa's system will be even better because of the high sound barriers that will block most headlights and highway spray back.

During the public consultation, I did express my opinion to City Staff that my preference for the alignment was to run on the northside of RR174 from Blair to Montreal Road. At some point between Montreal Road and Jeanne d'Arc, the alignment crossover the Highway to the southside of RR174 to service Jeanne d'Arc, the future Orleans Blvd Station, Place d'Orleans Station, and to Trim.

The issue with the alignment on the southside of RR174 that City Staff told me is that they would have relocate the existing hydro wires. And to relocate those hydro wires, it would require a new separate Environmental Assessment, which would further drive up cost.

That's my two cents.

Why wasn't Orleans part of phase 1? Phase 1 cost 2.1 billion, and phase 2 was originally planned to be 3 billion. The Orleans extension from Blair to Place is only 800 million (another 150 million ish to Trim). Sounds like Orleans could have been part of phase 1 for a total price of 2.9 billion, not much more than the original 2.1 billion. We couldn't send trains west of Moodie in phase 1 due to the NCC and the whole SJAM/tunnel issue that had to be resolved. But why couldn't Orleans have been part of phase 1? |As far as I know, there's nothing like the NCC tunnel issue affecting Orleans, especially since the city literally owns the 174. Please don't tell me the only reason is the whole "Why does Orleans get it first"? Is there a valid reason for Orleans not being a part of phase 1?

The original Phase 1 estimate was $1.4 billion and this went up to $2.1 billion in 2009, so don't think they could have sold another 40% increase. All the federal/provincial funding was locked in and governments were less generous on transit capital funding 10 years ago. There is some discussion of the technical rationale for phasing in this report from the 2008 TMP.

We were to be Phase 1, but we got replaced by east-enders and it was a whole lot cheaper. Now we get the consolation prize with poor service after waiting for 15 years and it will not be usable for those living inside the Greenbelt unless we are Carleton students. Oh well! I have been told repeatedly to 🞵🞵🞵🞵 it up.

Our Snapshot updates have resumed, now starting coverage for Stage 2 LRT construction.

The first station is Place d'Orleans. The other 4 eastern stations will be posted throughout this week. New to Snapshots will be video walkthroughs, discussing the current locations and what will be changing, and where everything will be once completed.

Good Day.

Attention All......

the old Stage 2 website "www.stage2lrt.ca" has disappeared.
it auto-sends you to the new City of Ottawa "www.ottawa.ca" major projects website.

Where the reference materials have gone to is the question.

FYI.
