Controversial $350-million project scrapped for Calgary’s Chinatown

Developer El Condor Lands has scrapped a controversial $350-million project for Calgary’s Chinatown. The developer requested the permit be cancelled at a hearing Tuesday at the Sub-Division Appeal Board.

The board agreed and withdrew the permit, meaning it can no longer go forward.

It’s being called a victory by those who have fought for changes to the plan for the last five years.

“The project itself, as submitted, is dead,” says Terry Wong, spokesperson for a group calling itself Friends of Chinatown.

El Condor Lands wanted to build two 27-storey high rise towers on a block of land between 2 and 3 avenues S.W. just off Centre Street, in the heart of Chinatown.

The towers were to house 519 condos and commercial property.

In addition, there were plans for a retail corridor and a 12-storey hotel.

Glad to hear the developer plans to come back with another DP but man it's frustrating seeing this shot down by NIMBYs.

Same way I felt when the City voted down the restoration & development of the 100 block on the south side of 7th Ave SW because the developer wanted to build an automated parkade as part of the project.

Trying to out stupid suburbia? It wasn’t an area around Dairy Queen, it was in the Dairy Queen. Natural gas leak. The smell is actually mercaptan. Added in order to be able to smell he natural gas if there is a leak.

I find it hard to believe that businesses in Chinatown would be opposed to an increase in residents in the area. More people will help to keep the area vibrant. I'd like to know who's behind this Friends of Chinatown group that they were able to force the developer to give up on what they had planned. Wasn't Druh in favor of this project?

The comment should obviously be taken as tongue in cheek. A mocking of Suburbia’s original comment.

Big buildings are usually a monument to a person, a company, a religion or a government.
Must agree with accord1999 here. Even at a city level, when you think of observation / restaurant towers, there is really no real need for them, yet cities come to embrace them and hold them up as their calling card. The CN Tower, Eiffel Tower, Calgary Tower - all no different. At the end of the day, this "mansion" construction is on-going and is not going to stop, so let's accept that and choose to critique or complement it, but not ad hominem the billionaire owner. It is the same reason the Stantec tower was specifically designed to be taller than Calgary's tallest, and the same reason every now and again, someone here pushes for a new tallest in western Canada. Human nature - live with it.

People calling for no pictures of a particular construction site because they don't like the project aren't thinking clearly IMHO.

Not that much, or it'd be done by now. Obviously a little slow in paying his bills.

Exactly. That's probably where 99% of the contamination comes from.

When I was talking about the amount of stupidity around here, I was referring to these kinds of posts. Message to some people: read the bloody article before making stupid comments. It's not difficult.

It says there is a higher than normal amount of fecal bacteria count in the river. something that happens often in smaller slower running rivers. It comes from animals, not people.

I don’t think the Bible is clear on this classification, but that’s beside the point. The boy did not back down, continuing to insist that humans are, in fact, animals, a fact he learned years ago from his parents, who told him about evolution. Not content with dispensing inaccurate information, the teacher referred to him as “the professor” for the rest of the day. Because there’s nothing like a supposed educator mocking a third grader for being smart.

In other words. Cell phone manufacturers keep putting better camera tech in their phones.
