Curbed is reporting that the hotel at the corner of Ponce and Peachtree starts construction today.

Hope it happens. I've always wondered why there hasn't been more development on Ponce.

With the hotel and the 135 unit, 18,500 sq. ft retail development (construction to begin Q2 2020) adjacent Mary Mac's, we may be seeing more infill between Midtown & the EST. This would be an essential corridor to have filled out in Atlanta.

StreetLights has the property under contract from Saint Mark, which has been located there since the early 1900s. The developer could break ground next spring, said Rob Bratton with StreetLights.

It looks a lot like the Alexan 880, but with a different color scheme. I guess that is what makes it "gothic" ??

I heard the DRC recommended the developer to work with Tim Keane and the city planning department to either make it more gothic or don’t attempt to make it gothic at all based off the renderings.

I agree it looks like other projects. Add the parking deck and I don’t consider it a good thing. We need better design in the city, especially in our densest neighborhoods.

That's good to hear. I guess I should have read the article a little more closely

Other Midtown projects have been through the City Studio program, such as a dual-branded hotel that just broke ground next to the Fox Theatre.

It's good they agree that this building is super fugly. I was looking forward to an actual gothic building, but if they don't understand what that means, then it's best to just skip it like you said.

Gothic, yet it uses practically no natural material like stone. It also looks nothing like their developments in Dallas/Houston that actually uses brick and limestone.

Very glad to hear Tim Keane will get to take a look at the design. The faux-Gothic spire sorely needs some revision. I have absolutely zero training in architecture and know that trying to stuff that silly spire on the building is a complete design disaster. Who decided that looked good?

Yeah and it's horse shit to argue as some have that the economics don't justify the use of materials like brick in Midtown if they do in Dallas or Houston. Rents are higher in Midtown than Dallas.

It is not even a spire, per se,...It is a pitched roof line...

I was at the meeting. The DRC specifically suggested they use lilli as inspiration if they could not afford the materials and techniques to match the gothic style of the church.

These make it look a little but the fact that this resemble Alexan 880 is not a good thing IMO. Hopefully the planning dept can help them improve this considerably,

I’m glad they are being pushed to design something better. I was pretty excited to see the renderings, as I live a couple blocks from this site. These don’t look great, but I think the developers will come back with a better design.
