Apparently there is road work going on at the corner of Wellington and Lyon. Haven't been in that area in a while. Could this be the changes that will allow northbound bus traffic on Lyon and a left turn after the arches (between Queen/Sparks and Wellington)?

I park at PdV II* and exit at Lyon most of the time. Work has been going on for about 2 weeks.

It will be extremely difficult to get out of that parking garage once Line 1 opens and STO adopts the new routing.

*As I've mentioned before, my partner and I carpool to work. It's cheaper than taking the bus (parking vs transit passes, gas not factored in) and convenient to visit family and friends after work along with numerous medical appointments.

What has this world evolved into where people feel it necessary to "excuse" their everyday routine? I'm not criticizing you, J.OT, just stating that we're evolving into a society where we feel we must conform to mob rule, for fear we'll be labeled one thing or another.

We (my partner and I) put in a lot of effort to try and reduce our environmental footprint and driving is one of the few things we haven't compromised on, and I guess we sort of feel guilty about it, even though transit isn't an option for anything beyond our normal commute.

I agree that our society in general seems very apologetic nowadays and it can sometimes get annoying, especially with politicians who apologize for every little thing (Meehan and Trudeau come to mind). On the other hand, you have those who are unapologetic no matter how bad they screw others over, which can be even more annoying (Trump and Doug Ford among many others). Sorry for dragging politics into this. Damn it!

In news that will surprise no one, Thales has been contracted to provide the CBTC for Stage 2 Confederation.

THALES SIGNALLING TECHNOLOGY SELECTED FOR MAJOR LRT LINE EXPANSION IN CANADA’S NATIONAL CAPITAL

06/13/2019

Canada’s National Capital relies on Thales signalling once again for its major LRT Line expansion. Thales has been contracted by East-West Connectors to provide its SelTrac™ Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) system for the City of Ottawa’s Stage 2 O-Train Confederation Line Extension project.

The Stage 2 Confederation Line extension will expand the initial 13 station Stage 1 Confederation Line farther east and west. The Stage 2 Confederation Line will extend east to Trim Road and west to Baseline Road and Moodie Drive, adding 28 kilometres of rail, 16 stations and a maintenance and storage facility. Following completion of the Stage 2 extension, the Confederation Line will consist of 29 stations spanning a distance of 40 kilometres providing more Ottawa residents with fast, efficient, clean and reliable light rail service.

Thales’s SelTrac™ Communications Based Train Control system is an integral part of the O-Train’s Stage 1 transportation solution, which is designed to meet Ottawa’s transit challenges with a system that integrates surrounding communities with existing cycling and pedestrian paths and roadways. Because Thales is familiar with the O-Train system, its operation and technology, and in particular the Light Rail Vehicles being used, Thales’s involvement in the Stage 2 Confederation Line extension minimizes integration risks and commissioning time.

"The Stage 2 O-Train Confederation Line Extension project allows Thales to continue to play an important role in providing a world-class transit system to Canada’s national capital. Continuing our work from Stage 1, our local, made-in-Ontario SelTrac™ CBTC technology is a key part of the O-Train system, bringing to life the next important phase of Ottawa’s long-term transit vision, providing passengers a faster, safer and greener way to commute.”– Dominique Gaiardo, Vice President and Managing Director for Thales’s urban rail signalling business.

Thales’s contribution to the Stage 2 O-Train Confederation Line Extension project consists of integrating control units on-board each train, the installation of guideway equipment, including zone controllers, as well as commissioning the system to be safely integrated within Stage 1 operations.

Thales is proud to bring proven expertise and decades of transit infrastructure experience to a project that will provide the transportation foundation for Ottawa’s growth and evolution through the twenty-first century.

It's not like it would be wise to have different signalling systems on the same line.

And as far as we know, we haven't had any issues with the control system.

That just proves why having at grade lrt is not a good idea for Ottawa and Gatineau. Drivers in our own metro are too stupid to share the road with anyone.

Ottawa is saving itself from the headaches that come with mixed traffic transit.

So long as there is a way to stop cars from riding on the ROW, most problems will be avoided.

It’s all about driver education at this point. They need to know that they aren’t the only ones on the road (freeways excepted).

Toronto has had streetcars for over a century and it still happens. At what point are drivers “educated” enough?

Never. Some of them are such a bunch of entitled s***heads that honk at cyclists who have the nerve to add 10 seconds to their commutes, while others drive into the middle of the intersection even when its obvious they won't make it through before the light changes.

It should be obvious that most people are not capable of handling a 2000lb machine with 100+hp every single day of their lives.

Cars should be banned from most cities. Of course, to do that we need to improve transit, which we can't do with all the traffic, because of bad transit.

I disagree, you can educate until you are blue in the face but Ottawa Gatineau drivers are too selfish to do what is right. Severe penalties for any road infractions is what's needed. Right now the penalties are way too light.

I don't think it's been noted here yet but both the trailer and the fence at Rideau street were gone when I walked by this morning.

Article this morning in CBC about reaching the 1 million milestone, and how the city needs a bit more swagger and risk-taking:

(I somehow hadn't seen the rendering for the towers at Bayview. When are these scheduled for?)
