Or anywhere.
The NBA has the added bonus of being cooler than the NHL, etc. - even among white people, but especially so in a diverse city with lots of residents whose families never played hockey.
And it's the big North American cities competing - it's Toronto's peers. NHL would be just as cool (with a less diverse audience) but CFL and the like can't compare at all. Who in Toronto is excited to beat Edmonton on Roger's Television? It's just... not the same.
We beat Corner Brook all the time for our provincial hockey cup. There's never been a parade and celebration like we had this week when we beat Toledo and won the Kelly Cup. That's our level, that's where we should be competing - and to win there feels great. Raptors are TO's level. And after the disappointment of the Leafs, fingers crossed it happens!
I can still remember watching Vancouver celebrate, then riot. This will be something people alive today remember about Toronto forever, whichever way it goes.
