Never said it was. The crash was caused by the hydraulics loosing pressure and retracting the slats/flaps on the port side, not the actual engine falling off. Same goes for the UA crash. Engine failures or loses should be designed not to cause control surface failures by building in redundancy into the systems. The DC10 was not well thought out by MD.

To take the design flaw a step further, the only stickshaker input was tied into the #1 engine as well, so the pilots were unaware of the stalled condition of the airplane.

JAL will be adding a second 787 9 flight in late June to ORD to go along with the 777-300 flight. TAP started service yesterday to ORD with A330 aircraft.

Is there a good source for finding out which aircraft foreign carriers fly into ORD?

I've seen a couple A-340s recently, but couldn't make out the livery. Could've been luftansa maybe.

Could be Lufthansa: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/DLH435

Or Iberian: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/IBE6275

Or occasionally, SAS: https://flightaware.com/live/flight/SAS944/history/20190522/0315Z/KORD/EKCH

^ cool, thanks.

So then it was lufthansa birds that I saw.

I love the look of a quad jet, it's too bad they're slowly going the way of the dodo, just like the tri-jets.

At least we'll still get to see a lot of cargo quads(747) and tri's (DC-10/MD-11) at ORD for many years to come.

Actually, it is A330-900neo. TAP has already received A330-900neo delivery. Brand new aircraft.

I saw the new bills passed this weekend contain measures for installing slot machines at O'Hare and Midway. Interesting...

Nothing is more annoying than the "WHEEL ... OF ... FORTUNE DING DING DING DING DING" in Nevada airports. Hopefully they're in closed rooms to avoid bothering the rest of us.

Just when we're spending all this money on ORD I can just see it tarted up with row after row of jingling machines. No, please, just no.

Not sure if this was posted before but WAMOS AIR also has been operating from ORD with A330 and 747 aircraft with direct passenger flights to London Gatwick.

OMG I flew out of Reno on the 4th of July one year and it was completely dead in there, except two hours of WHEEL....OF....FORTUNE! over and over and over. I still hear it swimming in my head.

On the other end of the spectrum, landing at Midway that night was a treat. Fireworks and explosions going off all around the plane to the point I was breathless, felt like landing in the center of a huge warzone.

The city does not want to place gambling slots at the airports because the revenue generated has to be spent on airport projects.

So I suspect they'll place a few machines in high traffic areas to advertise the Chicago casino, and maybe a few in the lounges to occupy bored travelers.

But no way are they going to place rows of machines in a place that can't generate money for the city and state.

Lounges? As in the airline lounges? I don't think so, they're meant to be a refuge for frequent travelers and charge a membership fee. Do you mean the gate areas?

I'm not sure... Probably not the airline lounges, and gate areas make enforcing age restrictions difficult, but I've seen most articles on the gambling debate imply that the slots would be located in something like smoking lounges?

On a side note, earlier casino consultants had stated the Thompson Center would be the best location for a city casino.

QANTAS AND AMERICAN AIRLINES WELCOME US DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION’S TENTATIVE APPROVAL OF JOINT BUSINESS
SYDNEY | PUBLISHED ON 4TH JUNE 2019 AT 8:34

Qantas and American Airlines welcome the US Department of Transportation’s tentative approval of the carriers’ joint business to better serve customers flying between the United States and Australia and New Zealand.

Final approval of the joint business will allow for commercial integration between the two carriers, delivering new routes and significant customer benefits not possible through any other form of cooperation, including:

As part of the case put to the DOT, Qantas and American flagged an intention to launch several new routes within the first two years of the proposed joint business. Qantas expects to announce details of two new routes – Brisbane-Chicago and Brisbane-San Francisco – once final approval is received.

I'm surprised that old bird is still flying, cargo only I assume. Its almost 50 years old.

I remember a lot of major crashes from the 70's and 80's on passenger flights. ESP the major one in 1979 at O'Hare. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Airlines_Flight_191

With the left wing stalled, the aircraft began banking to the left, rolling over onto its side until it was partially inverted at a 112-degree bank angle (as seen in the Laughlin photograph) with its right wing over its left wing. As the cockpit had been equipped with a closed-circuit television camera positioned behind the captain's shoulder and connected to view screens in the passenger cabin, it is possible that the passengers were able to witness these events from the viewpoint of the cockpit as the aircraft dove towards the ground.

I knew a lot of people that refused to fly on that thing. Tri jets scared a lot of public away from them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_Douglas_DC-10

In July 2018, there were 39 DC-10s and MD-10s in airline service with operators FedEx Express , Kelowna Flightcraft Air Charter, and TAB Airlines . On January 8, 2007, Northwest Airlines retired its last remaining DC-10 from scheduled passenger service, thus ending the aircraft's operations with major airlines.

Incidents and accidents

As of September 2015, the DC-10 had been involved in 55 accidents and incidents, including 32 hull-loss accidents,[59] with 1,261 occupant fatalities. Of these accidents and incidents, it has been involved in nine hijackings resulting in one death and a bombing resulting in 170 occupant fatalities. Despite its poor safety record in the 1970s, which gave it an unfavorable reputation, the DC-10 has proved to be a reliable aircraft with a low overall accident rate as of 1998. The DC-10's initially poor safety record has continuously improved as design flaws were rectified and fleet hours increased. The DC-10's lifetime safety record is comparable to similar second-generation passenger jets as of 2008.

Other notable accidents

As of last year, there were still 39 DC-10's in cargo service, 36 of which were in FedEx's fleet. There were also 121 MD-11's still flying, all in cargo service as well.

The last scheduled passenger flight of a DC-10 was in 2014. The last scheduled passenger flight of an MD-11 was also in 2014.

and the L-1011 and 727 also took their very last commercial passenger flights earlier this year, so if you want to ride on a full-size trijet, you'll have to go to russia where there is still one Tu-154 in passenger service with ALROSA and 23 Yak-42's in passenger service with several russian airlines (as of 2018).

Early accidents tarnished the DC-10's reputation, but it eventually earned a pretty good safety record for itself. Most pilots who flew the bird seemed to have only good things to say about it.

i frequently see FedEx DC-10/MD-11 going in and out of ORD.

Is there any airport other than Salt Lake that still has a smoking lounge? I think Nashville has a tobacco shop where you can smoke, but I don't think it has a smoking lounge.
