My latest photo of Ice District in Edmonton. Just five years ago this part of downtown was a giant surface lot and a big box Staples.

While it's a huge improvement it's very sterile. It's in much need of some landscaping at street level.

the tower is nice!, the bottom section tho...not my cup of tea.

The towers themselves look like two otherwise good looking buildings stacked on top of one another and the effect is not that great. But regardless of that, those buildings just have an absolutely domineering presence in the skyline that pictures really don't convey. They're an impressive sight in person. And of course a total sea change for that part of downtown Edmonton.

The towers are good filler (crazy thing to say about a signature development for an entire city) and add much needed density in what was a blighted area. Edmonton needs a couple nice signature towers nearby to really step up a level in terms of skyline.

I'm disappointed with the podium level of Stantec so far, but it's the plaza side that will really make or break the development IMO.

Ya the podium looks like something you might find in a 1980's industrial park or a large car dealership. At least from that angle.

I wouldn't call the Ice District towers filler, they're better than that, at least based on how they stand out from the skyline.

In some respects they'll never look better than they do now, as they totally dominate the skyline. It's an impressive effect.

Wow. From afar Edmonton`s new tallest looks sleek and impressive. But upon closer inspection it really looks weird and ugly. It DOES look like a filler, something that should be 120m wedged inbetween other buildings. Not a fan. Too bad.

Stantec Tower will look much better at night once the fins are illuminated. Of the two, I much prefer the design of the JW Marriott tower (Stantec is just very tall, but also very 'blah').

^ The 'two towers stacked on top of each other' look isn't great... the Stantec sign halfway up where the first tower effectively ends isn't helping the situation.

The farther away you are though, the less you notice it. From a couple KMs away, it looks damn good, much better than EPCOR with its weird top.

The view taken from that park always makes Calgary feel so isolated, really cool.

That's actually a different park than the one you're thinking of. I think you're thinking of Nose Hill, the enormous 12 km2 urban natural park a few kilometers north of downtown. The last one in the series I just posted (I imagine that's the one you're referring to) is taken from Tom Campbells Hill Natural Area, a kilometer east of the Downtown East Village.

Either way, I agree, it's cool how "alone" Calgary feels from a few different angles, just surrounded by a wild expanse.

Nose Hill provides views that can make the city look huge or non-existent. From above the Winter Club, the skyline seems enormous as one looks down on it with the city sprawling Los Angeles like through the basin. Some views to the west completely obscure the city with mountains soaring above grasslands. I never thought much of Nose Hill until I started exploring it in the late 90's. It is all about views.
