The best solution would be to keep one EB stop at Donald and then just eliminate the one at Smith which always seemed like a goofy place for one anyway. Winnipeg Transit is just nuts with stops spaced too close together, and that thinking has bled into the BRT system.

There should be 3 stops on Graham in each direction – one at each end, and one in the middle around Donald. There's lots of space in front of the library, and the city could push the shelter and benches back onto the church yard.

Agree - too many stops on Graham. Honestly taking the bus through that portion at any time. When I went from UW to UM it seemed that the area between Vaughn and Main took longer than the rest of the damn route.

I love how they'll crowd everything onto Graham, yet apparently don't realize that St. Marys and York exist, with ALOT more room for buses...

Yes, it's not perfect, but they have that mall there to corral all the buses and various routes into a centralised location.

I do like to see it improved, if there are any way to improve that mall to begin with.

Pre-boarding would be the greatest improvement they could make. All the busses could load while lights are red for Graham, then advance to the next stop on green. Build the shelters at the street edge, with turnstyles inside, and doors that open to the street to get on the busses.

I would think (and this is just a guess on my part) that more stops in higher density, higher Transit-frequent Graham Ave. helps diffuse passengers so that there are fewer waiting to board at any given station. With a bus-based system where everyone boards through one door (and fiddles with the fare card system as they go), boarding at peak times is a slow process. But if you can spread it around (five stops instead of three major ones), that may help.

Nevermind that no matter how quickly boarding goes, buses on Graham still have to stop at traffic lights every 100 metres.

If Winnipeg had a rail-based system that went down Graham (ala N. 5th St. in Minneapolis or 7th Ave. in Calgary), they could justify both: fewer stops (though "bendy buses" with multiple boarding points would do this, too); having traffic stopped at cross-streets so transit isn't held up at traffic lights

Well, they started work in early December if I recall correctly, and it took 5.5 months to finally get here, but it looks like excavation has finally started!

Stupid question but here goes: why sink caissons down if they're only going to excavate the entire site eventually? What are they building inside the caissons?

I think what they do is build their caissons then bury them in earth. So the actual caisson's top will be however deep the excavation is planned to be then they excavate up to the top of the caisson and begin forming the rest of the foundation from there.

That's it. They leave the site at oringal grade so it's easy to navigate. Instead of digging the hole down 10' or 20', then having to get access down into the hole. They do it from the top and bury the caissons.

Caisson would be a steel sleeve with concrete and rebar inside. I think they use a larger diameter sleeve at the top, then pull it out once the smaller diameter caisson inside is finished.

Then when ready, they dig down to the right elevation and the caisson are there ready to go.

Excavation is fully underway now. I drove by after lunch and they have made significant progress in the NW corner....looks to be about one level down now.
