It was probably about 20 years ago when Safeway started to buyout its longer term unionized workers. I knew someone who was a cashier making over $20 an hour. She took a buyout so they could replace her and others like her with lower paying new employees.

Yeah, I know a couple long term supermarket workers who were earning a modest but decent wage who lost their unionized jobs when their store closed. One of them is back in another store working for basically minimum wage.

His life became more stressful and difficult, but it's not like anyone's grocery bill has gone down as a result of this change...

Anyone have any new updates? Rumours or speculations? In regards to the former Sears locations at Polo Park and St Vital?

There absolutely is. There's a "black market" for stolen goods on social media which is too easy. Hopefully stores are filing police reports so police can set up some stings and charge people for petty theft. Hopefully this can get some people the help they need. We do have Drug Treatment Court in Winnipeg and Brandon.

I'm not all out against unions. As I've said before, they is a place for them. Things like grocers or waitressing, IMO, should not be unionized. That's just my opinion though.
The whole basis for a union is that employees have decided they want it. If a group of waiter's decide they want to unionize, it's up to them.

Speaking about former Sears, any word of an OFFICIAL announcement about the Kildonan Place location. We know from the City of Winnipeg documents that the mall be will re-development, with former Sears store becoming a 'Save on Foods' and a updated Cineplex movie theatre.

Going back to Canadian Tire, we have what's called profit sharing among us employees. In a way, these thefts would cost us our profit sharing, so it's money coming out of our pockets, at least to those of us who work at Canadian Tire.

It's relatively a short sample size, but for us, it's a huge deal, and it's goddam frustrating that our current laws and law enforcement are useless with the rise of these brazen thefts going on.

At the same time, it's not worth stopping these thieves when they're armed with needles and knives, especially with the ongoing meth crisis in not just this city, but in all of the prairies. I mean, look what happened to that kid at Polo Park Foot Locker. That incident slapped us in the face with reality.

Physical barriers, gates, actual security and cop presence within the malls - overall, over 9000% more advanced than apparent Winnipeg mall security, ever has and ever will be. I'm surprised at the fact Polo hasn't taken up the ante with security... CF Chinook has, and they're noticable as hell and never mess around either. Yet CF Polo (or what us old-timers called Polo Park, before Cadillac Fairview put their damn logo in front of it so we would all have to kiss their ass when trying to describe *their* mall), its almost as if they don't exist. And if they do, clearly they dont do much, except drive around flashing their lights, as if somehow that does anything to curb the security problem...

Long story short: if they want to stop thefts, they should really stop letting those people steamroll entire retailers out of business, and maybe stop pretending that Winnipeg is an episode of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood - minus the train, because Winnipeg just built a road to nowhere, since the trains too "prohibitive", along with drawing straight lines on a map, or basic road repairs. Prime example: Empress, which is also where my belongings got stolen when someone smashed into my friends car ourside Chapters and ran off with it all... the entire St. James area needs a massive security realignment, to be honest. And maybe some economic incentives too, like for example, hiring those people for jobs rebuilding the surface of the moon, roght beside the creek...

Someone posted on here with some inside knowledge on Polo Park. I cannot recall the specifics of what they said for sure but think it was at least one larger tenant moving into the space but not the whole space and the remaining space being split into smaller units. No specific names were mentioned.

The Cineplex name was very prominent in the KP redevelopment documents from the City of Winnipeg. "Save on Foods" though was not specifically named but the design language on the exterior is spot on with the exterior of the McPhillips Save on Foods so its a soft-confirmed one for now.

Well, it's not like Wpg has a huge security presence in its malls either...

Why expand movie theatres? Isn't the movie going experience in DECLINE? There isn't enough crap out there these days to have so many screens. I'd like to see a reduction, if any.

Besides, the government and big corporations have you by the tail. They already are able to build a database of your likes and dislikes in various Entertainments such as Netflix.

It's incredibly dissapointing that it'll be a Cineplex at Kildonan Park. I'd love to see a Landmark new build in Winnipeg.

Not all their screens at Grant Park are stadium seating, and there's some obvious deficiencies in some of their screens and sound systems. Despite this, I've been to a Cineplex theatre maybe once since Landmark installed recliner seating and immediately regretted it. The overall experience at Landmark is infinitely better.

Landmark's new builds in Alberta and Saskatchewan look fantastic. There really isn't any obvious place where they would want to build one though, as Grant Park is relatively central and they may not want to compete with the upcoming new Cineplex at KP.

LOL.....we could start a new thread. Annoying Calgarians we have known. I'm sure we all have similar stories about their tendency towards "charming observations" as it were, but referencing specifics will only annoy me again.

There are some parts of town where a new cinema could make sense... the western edge is one, as there is nothing once you get past Polo Park. The northern part is another, as there is a large swath of the city where Cinema City is the only place for movies.

And of course, downtown could use a modern new cinema...

Grant Park theatres are great. The washrooms are horrible.
