Burnaby Updates

I quite like what Burnaby is doing and also living in here. There is a sense of progress in this town and not just pretentious social progress, like many other places, but the city developing fast to become an even better and more exciting place to live. I only wish the city would invest more in car infrastructure but at least we are not as crazy as Vancouver with bike lanes everywhere.

I remember hearing about Metrotown Events Center in the past, but does anyone know what's the latest on that and where exactly could it be built?

I don't get it either. Sure there were other projects that were built with the other funds shown in the video, so why hold back on spending from the Community Benefit funds? It's not as if there's been no appropriate projects to spend it on.

I live in Burnaby too. I'm not saying it's all bad - just that it's not perfect either.

I haven't heard a thing about the Metrotown Events Center - the only thing I've heard about it in a long time was that video. Of course trying to google it comes up with all sorts of things linked to the mall...

This is long overdue since the closure, and much needed. So crowded when I get off Metrotown Station!

so it looks like it will come out between station square and metropolis and station square will probably have the better connection.

There's floor-to-ceiling windows just between Best Buy and the concourse with a bunch of decorative plants in front. It'll probably go there.

Only if they angle it. You can see the gap (under the hoop truss) where it will connect with the station. That would have it covering the crosswalk and connecting with the end of the existing mall walkway.

I don't get it either. Abbotsford's pedestrian bridge cost about $4 million in subsidies; even assuming that the city footed the rest of the bill, that's nowhere near $17M.

I am sure that this also includes removing the existing bridge and probably some work around the bus station...

Maybe the City plans on using it on bigger projects like converting Metrotown streets to feel more downtown/CBD-like in the future? I know that Burnaby is probably the first municipality to install LEDs to almost all its streetlights. Vancouver is trailing behind (as usual), and just recently starting to upgrade some of the downtown streets to LEDs.

I agree with that observation too. Generally, the City also lacks the kinds of Nimbies in Vancouver or W/N Van who oppose anything and everything. Burnaby now needs to invest more on its cultural assets such as a convention centre, performance/arts theatre, or perhaps an observation tower, all within the town centres.

Nada. The city has money divided up (as shown in the video GilmoreStation posted) and they've been spending from the other sections (such as for streetlights). It's just the very large Community Benefit funds that they've been sitting on for no obvious reason.

The pipeline protesters weren't all from Burnaby, and the anti-demoviction crowd has a point - Burnaby was tearing down rental buildings and not building any new ones (that's started to change since the local elections last year).

new owners out of Chicago probably want to get their moneys worth. They also bought Starlight in New Westminster.
