That's fine. I'll take daring and bold. What happened to that flesh wound tower just down the street? That's what I'm talking about.

Wasn't that disgusting and grotesque? It literally made me feel nauseated looking at it. Good thing it got revised. Vancouver sometimes has strange ideas in architectural taste.

The architect is from Los Angeles. He's still involved with the new design, but it hasn't actually been submitted yet, but it's nothing like the first building.

Paying homage to St Paul's hospital next door?
Might as well make the building like like a scrub.

I can't tell which way the mosaic part of the tower faces. I'm hoping south because that's where the skyline could use the most improvement.
It doesn't have an identity, or more like, it has multiple identities.

These towers are too big. You have to try and break up the massing by incorporating different design elements, otherwise you’ll have a plain looking tower. There is an oppressive amount of sea foam green towers in the dt peninsula. Most towers have no identity, so I hope the city doesn’t mess with this one.

UDP Review - Updated Model

Quote:
An Opportunity Like No Other – A Super Sized UDP Strongly Supports West End Landmark Tower

1157 Burrard Street
The meetings of the Urban Design Panel can sometimes feel pretty monotonous. Week after week, these volunteers are required to review buildings that city policy forces into a similar, 6-storey shape. However, this wasn’t one those times, as this proposal at the corner of Burrard and Davie triggered a “Super UDP” review under the Higher Buildings Policy.

After all, an application that will provide 236 homes, a 37 space daycare, 1570 sq.m. of office space, and possibly 50 hotel rooms (or more homes) at one of Vancouver’s most important intersections certainly deserves a little extra attention. Which is why the panel was joined by renowned architects, James K.M. Cheng and Karen Marler.

In their mind, the building would be a landmark, like the Hagia Sophia, allowing one to see the entrance to the West End from the skyline alone.

Hmm - didn't expect it to be so drab and brown.

I don't like the Davie side setback on the podium.
I can see they've done it to transition to the office block next door,
but that building is probably a candidate for demolition in the coming years.

Still don't like the way the core is exposed at the top without a transition.
Reminds me of the new Lougheed towers.

Interesting that the alley is planted with trees with a wide sidewalk
- I suppose they expect there to be a pedestrian interface from the redevelopment of the St. Paul's lands, rather than an alley.

bwahahah ahahah hahahhahahah ...

But seriously, why are they being so modest? It's clearly going to be the Taj Mahal of the West End, perhaps even the Parthenon of the Davie Village the way it will overlook the last remaining gas station in the downtown peninsula.

Sold for redevelopment - rumoured (on here I think) to be Concord Pacific.

Don't forget the West End Lanes are wider than anywhere else. They even have names (and addresses) these days. That's See-em-ia Lane - after Mary See-em-ia, granddaughter of Chief Capilano and wife of Eihu (who also has a lane).

I'm sorry but a water feature that looks like it belongs on the bucolic streets of Coal Harbour is not going to work at this corner.

Davie and Burrard is urban, lots of pedestrian traffic... drunks from the nearby bars... the fountain/water feature is going to be a mess.

The setback is also probably because all of Davie street to the west is maximum 1-2 storeys. A 6 storey massing right to the sidewalk would be a bit out of place. Provides nice rooftop patio space above the street. Not sure what that 3rd floor use is though.

Hmm, 1-2 storeys seems awfully short, even for a retail street.

I really like the height but the mediocre design gives away James Cheng being the "renowned" architect behind this.

It's designed by Merrick. James Cheng was one of the additional UDP members who gave it the thumbs up.

The tower looks disjointed and antagonizing to look at. It's trying to accommodate too many design elements already seen in other Vancouver towers in its massing, to make it stand out for all the wrong reasons.
