^No kidding - I wish they would change that designaion already and make the TCH the major route (i.e. switch to the Coke). If only the Feds would get involved and create a meaningful national highway program with consistent standards, upgrading, numbering, etc. (sigh)

To be fair, that is kinda the same as taking the TC from Toronto to Ottawa.

I am happy if they have a 4 lane highway not be designated as the TC.

There are 5 traffic light intersections on the TCH in Thunder Bay, however if you're westbound you can take an off ramp to avoid the fifth one. Actually you will take that offramp, or leave the TCH, since you can't make a hard right turn past the off ramp at the level crossing portion.

If you use the off ramp at the first intersection and drive through some residential streets then use Highway 102, you can avoid lights altogether, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having a highway.

Now, you can (I've done this many times) drive the highway without stopping at any of those lights, but it involves pacing yourself properly, so you're not driving a constant speed. I can slow to as much as 20km/h on that road while approaching a red light, but keep enough distance between myself and the next vehicle that I don't actually have to come to a full stop for it.

I have a Sherlock's Map of Winnipeg, which marks every signalized intersection. Technically, TCH 1 passes right through Winnipeg, so...
  • Headingly/Winnipeg (Portage Ave west of Perimeter): 6
  • Portage Ave (Rt 85): 34

  • Main St/St Mary's Rd (Rt 52): 9

They really need to redesignate the TCH through Calgary to the 201.

No, they need to freewayize the existing road. Most of the people using the #1 stop in Calgary so what's the sense of having them go out of their way only to have to divert to another road(s) to get to their destination? We need both. Actually, we need more freeways than that and now is a good time to at least finish turning Glenmore into one and start calling it the 8.

What an embarrassment to have 26 lights in a city as major as Calgary and a long stretch where the speed limit is a whopping 50 km/h.

Highway 20 on the island of Montreal. That is a Trans Canada Highway.

That is never going to happen. I would have preferred that 30 years ago they had done as you say rather than make 16th a really crappy urban boulevard, but it is what it is now and the ship has sailed. And since it's the trans Canada highway, not the get to inner North Calgary highway, we should re route it to the high quality road that exists rather than keep it on a city road.

It could, and should, be zero, by spending minimal amounts.

I just watched a video of A20 on YouTube. Needs to be expanded in places so they can increase the speed limit. The tunnels under downtown Montreal and the set minimum speed limit in places get huge thumbs up from me.

As little as 10 years ago the PC government said they wanted to get rid of all of the lights. Way too much traffic goes through the city to force people to go way the hell out of their way to get anywhere. If you want businesses to leave that's a good way of doing so.

So we should never fix the stupidity of the past? Does that also mean we shouldn't invest in digital whiteboards for schools because blackboards are good enough? We need to be striving for the best not what wasn't even good enough for the 1950s.

No, it's not. The TCH in Montreal is Freeway 40 and then straight to the tunnel with Freeway 25. Every inch is full expressway with multiple lanes.

I also just confirmed it with wikipedia which is the first source I found:

So no one is going to talk about the Bypass in Calgary... Stoney Trail? Or am I missing something? I thought the northern segments of Stoney Trail was essentially the new #1?? Or are we just talking about signage?

It's the 201. Milomilo thinks it should be the #1 but thankfully he's in not in charge. If you're heading west toward Calgary and want to go straight to Banff say, then using the 201 is the way to go. If you're going to downtown Calgary or just about anywhere in the north part of Calgary other than the extremes then it makes no sense taking the 201. The province's long-term plan is to divert the #1 from around Strathmore I believe south to hook-up with the 901 and then into the southern extreme of the 201 and then follow that back up to the existing #1 on the western edge of the city. I'm pretty sure that's one of the reasons why the SW leg of 201 is being made so big. If they do that they can blow up the existing #1 that's riddled with lights.

To be fair, not many drivers go straight through Calgary. Not really urgent to have an east-west freeway. Also would be extremely costly to convert 16th to free flowing.

That's exactly why you need a freeway.

We did fix it, we built Stoney Trail. What would spending x billion dollars to demolish a 15km corridor through Calgary achieve? That wouldn't be better spent on literally anything else, including other, actually useful roads?
