1290 Hornby - UDP

Quote:
Vancouver’s Crystalline Entity Nearly Fractures in Razor Thin UDP Vote
1290 Hornby

Even though Hannah and I had several strong complaints about this building’s design at its open house, it still makes me smile whenever I think about it. Clearly I watched too much Star Trek as a child, because I don’t think most people would associate an applicant’s design rational with a fictional space creature.

Ultimately that character met with an unhappy ending, and this proposal’s review came very close to sharing that fate. The meeting was actually delayed by over half an hour, as a few volunteer members had not shown up, and the panel was unable to reach quorum. After a few frantic phone calls, the quota was eventually reached when an ill panellist dragged themselves into the room.

That area of the peninsula is officially "The Architecture of the Damned" now.

A continuous graviton emission is required to destroy the The Crystalline Entity.

But seriously, is this any worse than all the other towers? At least there are contrasting colours and shapes.

Edit- Hold on here. Are they really calling it Crystalline Entity?

Yeah that name really sucks. Was something lost in the translation somewhere?

^^ Read the comments above and make a list of all the people who didn't even read the article.

Quote:
That said, despite their support for the project’s general shape, they felt the design still needed a lot of work. These critiques were mostly driven by a couple members who felt the building was crowded with too many elements. They took issue with how the bay windows met the base, the outdated look of the green glass balconies, and the busy roofline.

One person seemed unhappy with every aspect of the building, as they advised the applicant to relocate the cultural amenity’s main entrance, and reexamine the loading and drop off space. They even criticized the placement of a Mobi Station. As these concerns were not shared by the other panelists, they were not recommendations, but these comments will still be noted in the official minutes.

For such a long delayed meeting, these suggestions were short in length, but will likely require a lot of effort to pull off. In fact, the panel basically recommended a complete redesign, as they requested the applicant reconsider the colour palette, choice of material, as well as to simplify and refine the base, middle, and top of the building. Even then I wasn’t sure if this motion of support would pass, as it took a little longer than normal for someone to second it.

The result was very close, as the proposal narrowly passed by a vote of 3–2. However, the applicant will likely have to make big changes to the look of their building at the development application stage. This means your thoughts could have a large impact on this proposal’s appearance, so make sure you’re heard by commenting here.

It's not all that bad. It has a non uniform window pattern, differing lines and shapes giving it visual variation, which most towers don't have. Tone down the balconies and I think it's lookin' alright.

The UDP has way too much say in how a building should look. If it's ugly and controversial, so be it.

It always amazes me ... the UDP will either approve as is or, with modifications, an eerie UFO like this with a lackadaisical "cool, go for it" attitude,
yet pick and finick over a classy project like 1444 Alberni .... "oh, it's too New Yorkish.... oh, it's too "sophisticated and un-Vancouver, we need green glass, not classic stonework"
...... voilà voilà.
It's enough to blow your mind, if you consider deeply enough their attitudes, tastes and assessments.
