I mean... consumers are largely zombies when it comes to this stuff, but this is precisely why the Competition Bureau needs to grow some cojones and actually investigate the way these companies are pricing retail fuel.
They're manipulating prices based on the time of day in a way
no other region in Canada sees and by doing this, they're conditioning people to think 155.9 is cheap because they get used to the new higher price.
"Oh, what a relief, gas is coming back down, I can fill up again!" even though you're still paying a net 40 cents a litre more than you were 3 years ago at this time.
Add to that the fact that gas prices are 9-10 cents a litre more on average during the day (darn that daytime gas tax!) and it artificially changes consumer behaviour by making people wait til the evening so they can "save" a whopping $5 on their fill-up.
Competition Bureau: do your job.
