I promise, you'll be fine

Not sure where to really post this since it's not specifically Phoenix development, so I'll post here:

MLS has announced to expand to 30 teams. While there isn't any specific mention of Phoenix Rising grabbing a spot, I can't help but believe this was decided by MLS in order to award the remaining spots to the following: Sacramento or St. Louis will be awarded #28 and #29, and Phoenix Rising being the most probable contender for the #30 spot.

I really find it hard to believe with the current ownership of Phoenix Rising (including a billionaire and former major league soccer star), 100% private financing, the available land for a stadium and stadium plans, that Rising has yet to be awarded a spot. But I feel the support is there and the market is strong enough in Phoenix for an MLS team. So, my prediction is that the #30 spot will go to Phoenix.

If MLS skips over Phoenix for the 30 spot, that would be a huge blunder on their part for ignoring a major market and opportunity.

Plus, as mentioned, Rising already has a billionaire backer.

Edit: Even Columbus,OH has an MlLS franchise. :/

Yes, I was born in Columbus, so I can pick on them if I want.

Phoenix Rising seems to meet all the requirements. Big market, great demographics, stadium plan, good ownership group. But for some reason I have a sinking feeling we won't make the cut. I don't know if it's because we were sort of late to the expansion application process, or that it's a summer sport and people are incredulous about playing summer sports in Phoenix, or what. Hope I'm wrong.

MLS met with SDSU regarding co-branding their new (in final stages of planning before beginning construction) football stadium a couple weeks ago.

From what I have heard, San Diego has a real shot at getting the last MLS expansion. Hope I am wrong!

Oh... I work in sports.

Phoenix Rising packs the stadium every home game despite the summer heat, and it is an unshaded stadium. A shaded MLS stadium could be built, and it wouldn't necessarily need to be an enclosed dome, either.

I think the Arizona Diamondbacks attendance makes a compelling argument that baseball is not doing so well here.

I'm not a soccer fan but I think MLS would do well in Phoenix.

Yet, they still do better than 50% of all current MLB teams. If we would have a championship winning season, the numbers would go up.

I would never be satisfied with my results if someone told me I was in the 50th percentile.

If we could get a championship team in our pocket, the attendance #'s would climb. So, in answer to "never be satisfied in the top 50th percentile", give us a good product and it will be higher.

Exactly. If the team is doing great and top of the NL West, you see it reflected in attendance figures in July and August

Seems like you guys are trying to defend the Diamondbacks (must be baseball fans). Baseball attendance isn't great here, middling at best. I think soccer attendance would be better (in comparison to available seats, hard to draw a static comparison).

Seems like you are trying to defend the PHX Rising

Phoenix Metro area, as a whole, has a bandwagon mentality when it comes to sports. Fans show up in droves when they have a winning team on the ice, hardwood floor, or grass. Cardinals games do sell out but it’s because it’s 8 games the entire year. Show up to a Cowboys or Seahawks game and it will be at least 50/50. MLS will b the same and Rising will have to sustain on-field success to get the attendance figures you think they will achieve

LOL...no. I think D'backs attendance is pretty much on par with where it should be considering the size of the market.

Basically the Dbacks draw really well on weekends and poorly on weekdays. So what you get is the averages stated above.

They need more of a 38K seat stadium and they would draw better. There's this idea that "it's empty, nobody's going to the games" and so people think it's not the thing to do. Vs. Smaller stadium makes for a better environment and fewer empty seats and so it's the place to be.

Supply and demand. Too much seat supply.

How am I defending the Dbacks when I just said they need to put a winning product out on the field if they want to increase attendance numbers? As for being in the top 50%, that is relatively good considering the Diamondbacks are actually one of the smaller markets in the majors.

Not sure how they could ignore what is (will be) the 10th largest metro for a team - when nearly everything is in place. As for the summer/heat issue - how many teams do they have where summer conditions are 90'F + 90% humidity? Which is worse to play in? Not every market they've chosen has perfect 75F temp and low humidity... Something else is going on here.

Just a guess on my part

I think the D'Backs are already working out a deal with the Pima Tribe in Scottsdale to build a more intimate dome stadium in North Scottsdale, where the majority of their season ticket holders are from, and that they will walk out on Chase Field at the firs moment they can legally do so without getting sued.
Time will tell but I think I am correct about this.
