While I agree this is a great location for IHOP I really hope it's not yet another attempt at retail development to compete against Mapleton, Elmwood and Harrisville. Other than more restaurants (Denny's would be a good fit) I really don't know what else they could put in this development.

That area to be honest, doesn't really fit a "retail" development. That area is more appropriate as a "tourist" development, with services for visitors, like hotels, restaurants, gas stations and tourist destinations (like the Casino, Magnetic Hill, Magic Mountain, minigolf courses, arcades etc....)

Home Hardware aside, I don't see that area getting a Reitmans or EBGames or any other stores that usually pop up in retail centres.

At best I might see a dollar store, maybe a grocery store and a pharmacy and/or a liquor store out in that area eventually; but it won't be a retail nexus like Mapleton.

Agreed, and that's why I mentioned "hospitality or tourism related businesses" in my original post. I hope this is what they are aiming for, but in any event, I think it'll be a slow build out. The initial plan for the connector to Charles Lutes Road is just as a stub to service the driveway into the IHOP. It may stay this way for some time........

Interesting location for IHOP, I'm just glad we finally have one...now if we could just get an Olive Garden.

Why would Kent want to move? Their current warehouse is large, not that old and ideally placed in one of the largest retail developments in the region. The only reason why they would instigate such a move on their own (IMHO) is if they wanted to build a mega warehouse store like they built in Dartmouth Crossing (which itself was a relocation from MicMac Mall). There were other variables in play in the HRM move however. Dartmouth Crossing is much more successful than MicMac Mall and I think Kent wanted to benefit from having a swanky new megastore next to IKEA. In addition, Irving Shipyard wanted to use the old store for logistics for their naval shipbuilding program. This all makes sense. Building a new mega-warehouse store in Moncton however makes no sense to me at all. I'm not sure our market justifies it.

The only reason I can think of as to why Kent might consider a relocation to Day & Ross is if an interested party wanted their current location and made them an offer "too good to refuse".

Let's look at this more carefully. The Kent location at Wheeler Park is quite large, and lies immediately adjacent to an even larger (and currently vacant) Costco lot. The two properties together could accommodate a truly massive retail or commercial development.

Again, purely speculative, but if Kent is thinking of moving, there's gotta be a reason why.............

I think I will re-post this in the retail thread. Feel free to dissect my musings.........
I'm not sure anybody cleared it up, but Kent IS moving. They already bought the land which is currently occupied by Day&Ross. As for the reason, the only semi official reason I heard (from D&R Management) is because Elmwood Home Hardware is building along the highway. Sooo... Kent wants to be on the highway too.

I never knew home improvement stores wanted to be so close to the highways... we will have Home Hardware near Magnetic Hill, Kent on Mapleton, Home Hardware on Elmwood, Kent on Caledonia.

Dartmouth is getting their Cineplex Playdium, let's resurrect the rumor (or wishful thinking) that they could open one with an Imax by using both the Kent and former Costco locations...

Interesting. SNB shows the current owner of the property as Day And Ross Inc. with no recent sales transactions.

Any rumour about a move by Kent from Wheeler Park to Day & Ross is quite definitely unsubstantiated (at present).

I'm not sure about the rationale about being near the TCH. This move would be costly, but Kent did recently move their Dartmouth location from next to Mic Mac Mall to up on the hill next to IKEA, so it is not beyond the realm of possibility.

I'm not sure I believe this rumour currently though.........

The only one seemingly confirming it is a new user with only 1 post so yeah not exactly something I would take as much more than talk. Though I know Cineplex is planning on opening 20-25 new Playdiums so one coming to Moncton isn't beyond the realm of possible

I originally came with a similar news from one of my source back in December but no one here thought it was credible info.

A second individual unrelated to my source from Kent was told that they are moving .

Day Ross is supposedly moving vicinity of frenette and parsons

Regardless from all this info I'm getting, I will believe it when I see it .

With movie theaters on the way out, Cineplex is looking for new revenue streams. Not sure how well these Playdiums will do. I think they are trying anything right now. I know my grandchildren would rather sit in front of the 50 inch TV with a console and headset and spend there money on subs and new games.

The new Anglophone middle school in the Mountain View subdivision will be called the Maplehurst Middle School

This grandfather does the same thing. Every once in a while I search the movie listings, looking for a night out for me and my honey, but it's been years since I've seen a movie worth the price of admission, a gallon of Pepsi and a 20 cubic metre vat of popcorn. So back to Red Dead Redemption and Grand Theft Auto we go.

And so it begins - From Mayor Dawn Arnold's FB summary of council business.........

awarding the contract for Twin Oaks extension to allow for the North End YMCA (Dexter Construction=$2,100,000)
I am looking forward to the extension of Twin Oaks through to the Ryan Street roundabout, as it will considerably shorten the driving distance to Horsman Road (and on to Berry Mills Road) from the Evergreen Park and Kingswood Park neighbourhoods.

I foresee a future problem developing at the Twin Oaks/Evergreen intersection however. At present, most traffic continues northbound on Evergreen to get to Ryan Street. In the future, a lot of this traffic will turn left instead onto Twin Oaks to get to the roundabout. They will have to think about including a turning lane at this intersection or consider other alternatives, such as signalization or (horrors), another roundabout in order to manage this impending change in traffic patterns.

I am a casual driver for Day & Ross and they are in fact moving to Caledonia. They plan on being in the new location by March 2020.

I heard from a local Sobey's manager that Kent is indeed moving to there.

Just can't see this as being a problem. It's a 4-way stop, more people might simply turn left rather than go straight. What really changes in terms of timing? It won't be any busier than the 4-way stop at Evergreen and Glencairn or Evergreen and Shannon...traffic does not back up there either.

Interesting. These rumours then have definitely increasing in credence.

1) - Mapleton_Roadie has first hand knowledge, therefore the Day & Ross move to Caledonia Industrial Park is now essentially confirmed as far as I'm concerned.

2) - What happens to the old Day & Ross property on Mapleton however remains less certain. habs33's info remains second hand, and therefore is less reliable than the above rumour, but there are now at least three people stating that Kent is moving from Wheeler Park to the Day & Ross property on Mapleton. This rumour therefore cannot be ignored.

What would the loss of Kent mean to Wheeler Park (on top of the loss of Costco)?

This could mean an expanded development opportunity for Wheeler Park, but a confounding variable is the fact that CREIT (the owners of Wheeler Park) actually do not own these properties. Costco, Kent and Superstore are (were) what is know as "shadow anchors." Essentially, they are independently owned, but help to drive traffic to the adjacent retail development just by their co-location. The current Costco will also be a "shadow anchor" for the Granite Centre, once the Granite Centre actually breaks ground.

The Kent & Costco properties at Wheeler Park combined will be a big chunk of land, and immediately adjacent to one another. Are there developers already sniffing around about this? Is a future development opportunity here helping to drive the possible Kent move to the day & Ross site??? Hmmmm.........
