I'm a little concerned about the sale of 216 Elgin. It was (kind of) the first multiscreen theatre in the world. Does anyone know if it has heritage designation?

I'm also concerned for 216 Elgin. I don't want to get back into the "street character" debate that was had on the Churchil/Richmond thread, but...

I expect they plan something much larger than that.
If it's more purpose-built rentals backed by a reit like bayview, I'm good with it. Not sure condos are viable with all the other projects in the area and it's not exactly close to lrt.

Trend-Arlington residents oppose church expansion

Joanne Laucius, Ottawa Citizen
Updated: March 7, 2019

Trend-Arlington residents packed a public meeting organized to outline a church’s expansion plans in their west-end community.

St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church has been at the corner of Greenbank Road and Canfield Road for about 25 years. The church serves about 300 families, with about 25 to 30 families living in the neighbourhood, Nancy Meloche, a planner representing the church, told the meeting.

The church wants to expand to accommodate up to 550 families. It doesn’t have events space and wants to build a centre with a gym, meeting rooms and classrooms. If the plan goes ahead, the 25-year-old church would be torn down and replaced with a larger church, Meloshe told the approximately 100 people at the meeting.

The plan would require that the church have 110 parking spaces on the site, up from a current 90 spots. To accommodate the larger buildings and the parking spots, the church would need to demolish six adjacent homes. Five of the homes are already owned by the church.

But residents are concerned about parking on the street and incredulous that an expansion of this scale would need only 20 additional parking spaces.

A petition about the project attracted 155 signatures of residents who are strongly opposed to the plan, said Don Ball, a member of a community group that opposes the expansion.

The expansion would change the character of the neighbourhood, which has always been a quiet, low-density residential area, said Ball. When there are church services, there is an overflow onto Canfield Road of 10 to 20 cars. The proposed community centre would mean noise and traffic hazards every day of the week, he said.

One of the most contentious issues is that six homes could be demolished. The expansion would also mean rezoning the property for institutional use, which would set a precedent for similar projects in the future, said Ball.

“These are five beautiful two-storey homes that are valued in the community,” said Paul Strandberg, who lives about a block from the church. “The church would turn form a small community church into a regional church.

“They’re going to take houses out of our residential community and turn it into a parking lot. It doesn’t make sense.”

St. Mary’s has made no formal application to the city so far, although it held a pre-consultation meeting with city staff last June. The church has until this June to file a formal application.

Some compromises were mentioned at the meeting, including leasing parking spaces from schools and a medical centre nearby when church services are held.

At one point, there was scattered applause when it was mentioned that the church could sell the houses and buy a larger property elsewhere large enough for the expansion.

Coun. Keith Egli told the meeting that if the church decides not to go ahead with the plans, theoretically, the five houses it already owns could be sold as a block to a developer.

Egli said he’s aware that there’s a lot of angst and frustration about the proposal.

“But I know from listening to the church they feel they’re part of the community as well.”

Sean Devine, the president of the Trend-Arlington Community Association, said the association has taken no stance on the expansion yet.

“We couldn’t really know what the community wants until we hold a process. We’re here to listen to both sides of the proposal.”

210 Metcalfe

Anybody knows what is going on in the rental building at 210 Metcalfe (Metcalfe and Nepean) aka Queen Elizabeth Apartments? There is a fence all around it and windows on the ground level have been closed with wood panels. It’s been like that for several weeks.

Foundation repairs. There was an article from a couple years ago that stated the issues arose as a result of excavation across the street at 198 Metcalfe.... really wish they would just tear it down and build something better.

Hop on the subway, just steps from our front doors, to catch the Ottawa Redblacks in action at TD place.

With everything around Rideau Station that's easily accessible by subway, why in the hell would you say TD Place, which in no way even a one stop ride on Line 1 would make your trip more efficient, be the go to as an O-Train destination?

These blurbs are written for maximum impact with little attention to detail usually by poorly paid copywriters in India. Something like $5-6 bucks a day to write a couple dozen of them. I once ran a resort in Asia and my Agoda description read "5 kms from downtown" (I was 30 kms away...) "10 minute drive to the airport" (at least 40 minutes as i was in the boonies) and "close to all the nighttime excitement the city has to offer" Again, 30 kms away in a city where everything shuts down at midnight. So huge errors are pretty much the norm in these things.

Greatwise has updated their "common soon" section and posted updates for 2 of their new projects:

CITA (Playfair and Kilbourne)

These look to be condos - Here's the website: http://citacondo.com/index.html

Playfair (9 Story Rental - same location as CITA)

Anyone know what this is being built by the aqueduct near the western LRT tunnel portal? Is it related to the LRT, the pump house or the new library?

Emergency exit, maybe? Looks too far from the tunnel though.

I'm sort of serious - I wonder if there might be some kind of top secret escape route from Parliament Hill? (Kanata Forming, hmmm)

Maybe this is the exit, and Kitchissippi will be visited shortly.

It looks like it must be the western end of the CSST - item one on this page: https://ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/public-en...nnel-csst/construction-sites-and-updates

More info here with some photos: https://cityofottawa.activehosted.com/index.php?action=social&c=5710&m=5968

Site 1 is the western end of the East-West Tunnel (EWT) and the tunnel boring machine’s final exit point. Ultimately, Site 1 will house a flow diversion chamber, an access point for operations staff and large equipment, and an odour control facility. The flow diversion chamber structure will divert potential overflows from the Booth Street Sewer and Cave Creek Collector toward the EWT.
