I work in the West Loop and experience it daily... There are some traffic issues but they’re pretty localized to certain blocks. Definitely not gridlock, CDOT just needs to make some tweaks, which is an ongoing process. And honestly most of the problem is because the city has been slow to add traffic signals to intersections. Right now there are too many four-way stops, which is great for the pedestrians but really snarls traffic.
They are supposed to add a few signals along Lake which will ease the congestion there. Randolph is more complicated because of the service drives, but there is discussion of eliminating these to create a pedestrian mall with traffic pushed either to the center or the edges.
Lastly, where do you get the idea that all the new residents are bringing cars? That’s like a NIMBY mantra and it isn’t borne out in the fact that most residential developments have parking ratios around 0.5:1 and most office developments are providing zero parking, Sterling Bay’s big projects notwithstanding.
