The car wash owner. The City bought it for like $3mil, sold it back at $1mil. From what I remember of it.

So I'm guessing this is what the Shell at the Osborne St bridge was hoping to pull off when the city was talking about expropriating land to allow a proper SB Osborne bike lane...

I guess it kind of makes sense at St. Matthews. It's just like "we had this business, demo'd it, and now want someone to put up a business."
Jamie and Laurie Penner sold out to the city and Abraham Tasse bought it from the City.

As for Thyme looking at their website says they still have a local store in St Vital.

The other thing to check on with the bigger companies is their return policy for clothing purchased online. I think a lot of stores have more items on their website, ship for free and give you unlimited returns to stores with no penalty.

Someone I know worked in fashion retail told me all the time about getting returns of online exclusive items to their store. If you (or your partner) are having trouble finding stuff you like locally that could be an option.

As I said previously, the market is extremely niche so it likely doesn't get quite the same turnover they may be used to at other clothing retailers.

Ft. Garry Goodwill Store On Fire

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/crash-goodwill-thrift-store-fire-winnipeg-1.5072077

Ft. Garry Goodwill store catches fire, after car rams window. Cause is most likely driver had a stroke/heart attack/whatever. Or could it be terrorism? We don't know yet. One person (from the store?) was sent to Hosp.

Another "CRU" gone.

Thanks for the info. Any info on prices? Everyone at the time was adamant the City took a huge bath with that one.

We checked the Thyme website and it listed a few locations. I think KP and Polo were both closed. Maybe it was St. Vital, I can't remember. We've been around to all the malls and it's blending together in my mind.

Where there is a PF Chang, there is usually a Cheesecake Factory. I for one would love to have both of them in Winnipeg.

Loblaw Expands in Winnipeg Under No Frills Banner

The retailer makes history with a new first-of-its-kind store, betting on consumers’ love for low prices…

by Maggie Mead
Monday, March 25th, 2019

Come for the poutine; stay for the, well, everything else that’s great with Canada—including an arch-social media savvy discount grocer’s growing presence. Loblaw has announced further Canadian expansion under its No Frills banner, making the company one of many retailers looking to expand in the Great White North.

In the same fashion that Sobeys’ parent, Empire, revealed plans to expand its Farm Boy brand into the Toronto and Ontario area, Loblaw is targeting expansion in its own key regional market: Winnipeg. The company’s No Frills banner has been around since the 1970s, reports The Winnipeg Free Press, but Loblaw has recently found a new home for the chain in Winnipeg, opening its fifth store in the city this week.

...

The new store will occupy 32,000 square feet and will be located at 1500 Plessis Rd. in Winnipeg. It is anticipated that the new store will need a workforce of around 75 full- and part-time employees who will be unionized with collective bargaining agreements with the United Food Commercial Workers defining benefits, wage rates, and pensions.

"This one will be the first purpose-built new structure just for No Frills, and that’s very exciting in and of itself," Pierce said.

Bolded has to be one of the most overrated restaurants IMO, had the displeasure of eating at one in Des Moines back in September, unimpressed!

^^ None of the Winnipeg No Frills have been net new stores. In fact other than Plessis they have opened in the same location as Extra Foods stores. Extra Foods itself mostly replaced older Economart stores except for Roblin which has previously been a Superstore location and Plessis which operated out of a former Safeway location just slightly east of Plessis on Regent.

Superstore Charleswood was Loblaws in the 1970s.

Before Superstore Grant & Kenaston opened October 1983 that and the Loblaws store at Polo Park were the only of that chain in the area reasonably located from our family house (south River Heights). Was there a Loblaws in Assiniboia (Westwood, Crestview) area?

Forty years ago (1979) was Winnipeg's first scanner supermarket, The Food Box, a WestFair owned store, featured a scanner for putting through grocery items. It was located somewhere on 1729 Pembina Hwy. (Ft. Garry)*.

^ Where was the Loblaws at Polo Park? Was it in the mall itself? I can't remember any supermarket at Polo Park other than Safeway.

Predates my time but I heard stories that Polo Park Loblaws was part of the main mall on the southeast side. Basically a mirror to Forever 21/Safeway.

Grocery stores in shopping malls doesn't seem to be a thing in Canada anymore. Growing up most malls had at least one grocery store as an anchor.

When I was in Australia last year most malls had multiple grocery store in them. One mall had an IGA, Woolworths, Coles and an Aldi. Even the urban malls like Westfield Bondi had a Woolworths, a coles, one other one.

I wonder why they never seem to be part of malls in Canada anymore.

Rent costs pushed most grocery stores out of Canadian malls. The recent wave of anchor vacancies (Eaton's, Target, Sears) is pulling them back in is the landlord look for anyone willing to fill the space.

I have always enjoyed my meals at The Cheesecake Factory in Minneapolis and Las Vegas.

Too bad you did not enjoy your meal. When I have a problem with something at a restaurant, I usually email the Head Office to let them know. They appreciate the feedback as a rule.
