Sunnyside Greenhouse and surrounding homes to the east are being demolished now, presumably for this project.

That’s exactly what it is. At first glance it seems like a waste not having the garage entrance from the alley, but having it come through the side of the yard is a much grander entrance. An entrance from the alley would cheapen it.

Entry from the street is better from an optics perspective, but perhaps they could have placed it closer to the street. As it sits now, the entire back will need to be paved (or equiv).

Any ideas as to why it is built so high?

I'm wondering if it's a rooftop deck of some type? It's to short for a separate suite, and the ceiling in the garage is low, right above the door height.

Agreed. An entrance off the alley would be shit for a place this nice.

No kidding. A mansion like that requires a fancy front entrance to the parking facility. Whoever bought that place probably plans on throwing some fancy parties and wants the neighbors to see the high rollers of Calgary arrive at them. Hopefully Daemon can score an invite...and possibly hook up with the hot young daughter.

Inner city sprawl squared. Massive lots plus an ally that is just there for "prescription" deliveries.

Really happy with the house itself though. Looked like a real fortress in the renders.

I don't see an entrance up to the rooftop though. The lower part is without a doubt a garage, you can tell by the concrete pad. The upper part though?

I'm thinking rooftop deck too, access via internal stairwell? it looks like there's some below grade working happening to the left of the dumpster, is there perhaps a underground connection to the house too?

overall, I like the place. knowing that the owners are prepared to go full roof korean when the commies try to redistribute their wealth only makes me like it more

The more I look at it, the more it looks like a rooftop patio, that’s about all it can be. Would be a great place to have a barbeque.

I imagine an owner who has some exotics and who would like to have them out of the garage, maybe doing some hand polishing, but still within the confines of their property rather than out near the street.

If you have exotic cars in your garage all the more reason not to have an alley entrance into the garage.

Perfectly true. And just to be clear, my focus on the alley situation was just to demonstrate how the alley is such dead space in urban sprawl areas. At least in this case, the owner is maximizing the built space on this large lot - when they have those little shacks on big lots, that's the worst.

Very true. There isn’t a more bigger waste of space than an alleyway. People who have alleyways should pay an extra tax of some kind. That and they conducive to crime.

I fully agree about the crime part. Back when I lived in Brentwood there was always some weirdo hanging around in the alley, mostly to peer into people’s windows I think. If it wasn’t some perv, it was a bottle picker or someone doing a crack deal.
