Yes there is. The hotel lobby is on 70 along with a bar with chairs and couches. The top floor is outside with a bar.

I know this is a joke but Philly probably has the third or fourth densest downtown in the United States. Considering where LA started from 15 - 20 years ago, if it could match Philly or SF within a decade, that would be a significant accomplishment.

In 2000, DTLA’s population was 18000.

In 2019, DTLA’s population was 75,000.

In 2039, DTLA’s population could be 132,000 if the trend stays the same.


Philly DT’s population is 183,000 today.

Unfortunately, I think we’re seeing the end of the current boom (Urbanize.la has mostly been dead concerning DTLA).

That's no small claim to make. What makes you say this? I think LA is just getting a running start, DT will only keep growing from here, it is only natural in this day and age.

^ Yeah, I'm not quite sure we're at the end of the current cycle (though it's very, very possible). Related's Grand Avenue project just started construction, and later this year we'll see the wrapping up of a few projects that will go into leasing. If leasing activity is similarly strong to what we've seen in the last 18 months and we don't have a significant global economic downturn, we should see a few projects start up by end of year/beginning of next year as they secure financing. Alts are a major theme right now in the investment world as a good hedge against market volatility, and real estate is a significant driver of the alts category. Unless we start to see the fundamental economics of rental properties start to crumble (i.e., the buildings sit vacant for longer than 6-12 months), we should continue to see financing capital flow into residential products. And we have a few projects getting near a point where they can start construction.

Structural it’s there already (save San Francisco). It just needs the vitality and cultural/entertainment destinations. Philly has museums, universities and historical architecture. Seattle has the waterfront, shopping, Seattle Center.

LA should move its major science and art museums downtown. They should move UCLA downtown (by the LA River maybe) and integrate USC more into downtown. Also enlarge McCarthur park westward (put in a zoo on the westside) another two blocks/southward another block and redevelop/gentrify that whole area with high rises and put in a luxury boutique shopping district between the park and downtown. Along with Apple, put in a large toy store on Broadway and a Nordstrom.

Of course adding a few supertalls and about 3 dozen towers would cement it.
You could let Pepperdine take over the old UCLA.

Maybe one other thing they can do is get the Golden Gate Bridge to move downtown.

I feel DTLA just lacks that one big tourist draw, which is unfortunate. It doesn't have a Golden Gate bridge, Eiffel Tower, Space Needle, Times Square or anything like that. We need a Hollywood Sign, Walk of Fame, Griffith Observatory equivalent in Downtown. I suppose you could say the Walt Disney Hall is that, but meh. Maybe I am wrong and overlooking something? I would love to hear some ideas of that next big icon for LA that could be built in DTLA. I don't necessarily think a building would be it, but who knows - it could be.

I don't think it needs any of that. As a downtown resident I think the growing Music Center crowd is growing in leaps and bounds. And when the Grand (Grand Avenue Project) is complete, the area will be an even bigger tourist destination. MOCA is expanding. The Music Center outdoor Plaza area is going thru a multi-million dollar renovation. Plus there will be a new rail stop a block away. Angel's Flight is quite popular which is perfect between California Plaza/the Music Center and Grand Central Market below on Hill St.
All this grit talk is crazy. If this means continuing to see all the beautiful historic buildings rot away right before our eyes, then grit has to go. The Adaptable Reuse Initiative is such a great thing, and many of the bldgs that have been restored and reused look totally breathtaking.
What I think downtown needs is a bonafide shopping district. In and around Broadway is where this is slowly coming to life. Acne, Aesop, COS, Theory, A.P.C, Van's, Apple, Paul Smith, BNKR, Mykita, Urban Outfitters, West Elm and the Jordan Flagship store are there or are opening soon, just to name a few. And when the Broadway Trade Center opens in about a year and a half, we will have a pretty cool downtown shopping district.
