BREAKING NEWS - the replacement hotel for the V Hotel will be a Hilton Garden Inn. It will be only four stories, like the Hyatt Place.

Many may be disappointed that this new hotel is only four storeys, but this is still a nice bit of modern infill, and will complete the west side of this block of Highfield Street. The Hilton Garden Inn will have 118 rooms and will be nearly identical in size to the Hyatt Place Hotel currently under construction. The plan shows a restaurant on the ground floor with an outdoor patio, but it doesn't appear very large, and I doubt that it will be a name restaurant of any kind.

It definitely looks better than what is currently there, though a bit suburban looking and I feel like it could use 5th floor. In the end, I’d rather have a a downtown core full of 4 story buildings than one full of parking lots.. so I guess in the end this is another good addition in the end.

I am so relieved on the IHOP news.

This is a nice added bonus solving the mystery with the V Hotel. I wish it was taller but also agree that many great cities aren't filled with tall buildings, but have a great density to them. Having the Hyatt, Hilton and Crowne all together in that area should really generate some additional development, its also another nice selling feature for future events at the Avenir Centre.

Next news I'd love to hear about a redevelopment of the ground level shops of the Crowne & possibly some renovations to update the facade. I wonder how this hilton impacts the hotel that was supposed to be part of the tannery development.

Didn't the Hilton folks confirm, at one point, a Garden Hill for the development across from Sobeys, west side of Vaughn Harvey?

That's a Home 2 Suites by Hilton, and as to lirette's question above, theshark recently found a card on CCD Canada regarding the Home 2 Suites project. This usually means that planning is still going on, with construction in the not too distant future.

On the CCD Canada website (https://www.ccdcanada.com), on the sidebar, the Home 2 Suites project is still listed as one of the top 50 viewed projects on their site.

CCD stands for Construction Canada Data, and is a clearing house for construction related news. Unfortunately it is a private site accessible to industry insiders only and requires a password.

I do wonder why the city doesn’t have incentives for Developers to build up in the core. Like I said before I’m not against 4 story buildings, it just seems like the developers in the city would prefer to build out instead of up and it’s seems like the city doesn’t have interest in pushing them to be more ambitious.

Would be nice if the Hilton Garden Inn would be more street oriented. Looks like a typical suburban hotel aside from the underground parking. The new one in Fredericton has a much better design.

There's nothing inherently wrong with four storey buildings but I suspect that land prices and the current lack of density in the core are the biggest factors in the lack of height. The city could certainly tighten up the zoning rules to encourage height though.

100%. I’m not against four storey buildings. I think they are key to helping the city core. I just see hotel developments in city cores as something that should be ideally taller and with less grass... it comes across as very suburban. Now having said this, I will also be the same person who will be very happy with this development once it’s built. My views on specific building heights etc., are just personal opinions and should be taken as that. I’m pleased with what I see, but can always dream for more.

I wonder if they'll just recycle the crane from the Hyatt Place to the Hilton Garden Inn project once they finish pouring the fourth floor? The timing seems about right..........

The Hilton Garden Inn is a welcome addition, I also hoped that it was taller with less of a suburban feel. With that being said, the lower height of the building bothers me less here than the Hyatt Place does on Main Street, the hotel next to the Avenir Centre should've been a showpiece in size and height.
