I agree that will help. They need to fix the big bottle neck on 11th street from McKnight to 64th. If that was smoother traffic would really flow
The basketweave projects between Southland/Anderson & the one between McNight/64th will get things flowing better too. North of Memorial all non accidents back ups start at the mess between McNight/64th ( the beddington snarl probably clears up with the 11th street fix)

Brian Mason is reported to be announcing something big for Deerfoot Trail tomorrow, anybody have any ideas about what it could be? The way it's phrased as a major expansion, it might be the Southland/Anderson basket weave (or hopefully all three of the Deerfoot specific recommendations)?

The last project I remember on Deerfoot itself (besides the BRT bridge at 17ave) was between beddington and 64th. Things went quite smooth with that project. The building of the 4 interchanges and the expansion of the freeway between Douglasglen and McKenzie Lake, although taking nearly a decade went quite smooth as well. No matter what the shirt term pain any of the potential projects will help the flow of Deerfoot
What about reconfig of the Piegan interchange? Wasn’t that around 2009?

Seems like a poor return on vote buying given that deep SE Calgary is about as NDP unfriendly as it gets

Oh I don't know. They have a good number of health workers, teachers, and otherwise post-secondary educated folks also.

Fixing the Glenmore Interchange would be a huge improvement and welcome by everyone other than the anti-car gang. Lack of commitment to infrastructure is what scares me the most about Kenney. We tried doing that before and we're still trying to catch up. If the NDP wouldn't shoot itself in the foot on other issues they might actually have had a chance to win this election. I feel like we're being forced to choose between the lesser of two evils.

The Deerfoot trail study is supposed to come out in Q1 2019, is it naive to think it might be that?

Heaven forbid a government might build infrastructure where it's needed, not where it buys votes...

21 km represents almost half of the 46 km from De Winton fork to Stoney NE. Finding detailed plans now.
That was exciting news until I read the 2023 start date. I’d love to have the optimism that the UCP (if they are elected) will be spending a half billion on infrastructure like the NDP loves to do

I'm guessing it's 21 lane km, and the figure includes lanes added to ramps. Hopefully they aren't just adding lanes where it is easy, not fixing the bottlenecks as that will make things worse. Looking forward to the deets!

$478m doesn't sound like enough to fully fix it. Just fixing Crowchild is over a billion for a few (admittedly complicated) km of road. Deerfoot is a bigger problem.

Based on the limited info available right now...I'm not a fan. The answer isn't to simply bolt more lanes onto Deerfoot. It doesn't solve anything and will be congested all over again shortly after.

I'd rather the focus be on key bottlenecks, which my interpretation of the initial information suggests they aren't really doing. I hope I'm wrong.

My hit list for $450 million would be:
- Upgrade Anderson/Bow Bottom and Glenmore interchanges so there are 3 core lanes in each direction on Deerfoot.
- Add basketweave ramps for the numerous short weaves which kill traffic flow. The ones that immediately come to mind are between Southland and Anderson/Bow Bottom, Memorial and 17th and McKnight and 64th.

That's probably it for $500 million. Anderson would be $150 million, Glenmore $100 million, and each basketweave would be about $50 million given all the work that go on around it. The rest would go to the variable speed limit stuff and the rest of the short term suggested improvements.

A budget or around $500M sounds hopelessly inadequate. This sounds like pre-election misdirection.

Also, did the newly construct BRT flyover at 17th provide enough clearance for additional Deerfoot lanes?

Well, the announcement had:

The short term fixes in the city study which are provincial jurisdiction are:
The southland basket weave and the ramp from the airport commercial at beddington to northbound.

So the province will do the short term things, upgrade the squeezes between beddington to the Bow Bottom Complex to four lanes, and do other reconfiguration at Memorial, 17, Glenmore, Southland, and the Bow Bottom Complex.

Now, the interchanges might not get to ultimate stage, but these projects do benefit from having a lot of land around them. And bundling projects together can lower cost, if we don't demand all the projects be completed simultaneously (moving crews between projects, providing certainty to contractors so they can invest in the most efficient equipment since they know they have 6 years of building bridges for example).

The north Deerfoot weaves, will have to wait for more money and more study. Maybe flow will improve up there, but probably not.

Almost certainly no. Definitely not enough room for a lane and a shoulder. I know extra lanes don't solve everything, but that decision seemed incredibly short sighted.

Extra lanes solve a lot. You can't expect an original road setup to be adequate forever and it's stupid to have a variable number of lanes like Deerfoot has. As for that BRT bridge, why did the province ever agree to it when these expansion plans were in the work?

Oh, there is room. Firstly, the lanes under that bridge are above the Alberta design guidelines of 3.7m by a measuring tool.

Then, the median will have to shift though, and the mini shoulder on it will have to compress if you want to keep 3.7 m lanes. There is a bit more than a meter on the west side beyond the shoulder, and 4 on the east, a 2 meters surplus on the median.

If you need even more, you can shave 20 cm off the shoulders (they'll still meet the 3.5m standard).

The 2023 date makes sense given that the West leg of 201 is supposed to be completed in 2022. I think they're trying to indicate to people that major road projects will not end in Calgary just because 201 is done.

The fact that the UCP is saying nothing positive about infrastructure has me worried. We need good infrastructure to grow the economy.

Where are you measuring it? Google maps doesn't have up to date images.

I fully admit this is a poor indicator, but driving underneath it, it seems very hard to see how they could put in extra lanes and shoulders - the shoulders are already undersized if I remember right. If my eyes are wrong, that's great.
