These are market rentals. FYI the "afforable" component that I hear regularily tied to the classification and program terminology of the Rental 100 program come from the Province, as far as I remember (80%) when it was written. The City has to include that term in the program when it was penned. The term refers to and in comparasion to a mortgage.

"Expensive" and "affordable" are relative. Old rentals at below market rates are expensive to landowners (property tax), but affordable to renters of a certain income bracket. While "expensive rentals" may be out of reach for a good number of individials and households earning below $60k for a nice new unit, but is more affordable for the landowner.

I'm guessing that it will be a fairly substantial renovation. They are turning it into a new, boutique hotel:

Hopefully a facade restoration to look as it was originally built. The cornice was quite nice with nice brick detailing near the top.

The Moda Hotel (formerly Dufferin Hotel) on Seymour was just painted on the outside (but it still had its cornice)

I can't remember now, is the brick on the Comfort Inn painted or covered in stucco? If stucco It's possible it could be easily removed, if not they could always paint in the same motif the original brickwork had if it has been painted over. A cornice rebuild is pretty straightforward as long as you have original pictures of how it looked, these buildings had a cornice that was often just sheet metal wrapped around a wood frame which is easy to recreate; which it looked like this one had.

Why don't we have exterior fire escapes anymore?

People don't want to walk down steel staircases down 50 floors outside.

Someone correct me if i'm wrong but I believe they were outlawed and mandated internal stairwells be fit in or attached to older buildings for fire egress a few decades ago. I think it was in the 70's or 80's when the law changed for them as that's when many older buildings had new proper staircase structures added usually in the alley or take out a room in a suite on each floor to fit a second staircase to replace these exterior mounted open steel fire escapes.

White and off white paints had the highest amount of lead and were ideal for outdoors and applying to brickwork. It's likely safest to encapsulate the old paint below than expose it from cleaning.

No I meant why have they been removed from all the old buildings

Having to retrofit in an internal stairwell would be one huge expense.

Sorry my mistake. I think it's part of Part 11 of the Vancouver Building bylaws when people upgrade a building.

Is that Hollywood North?

That sucks, Vancouver’s one true Japanese hostess bar.

By the time I move back to Vancouver I don’t think there will be a single establishment that I liked left.

Is the Warehouse still around?
