I read an article recently, maybe about the shutdown, that PDX was getting ready to start an almost $2B core terminal redevelopment. I've been hearing about this for almost a decade, anyone seen additional detail? This is in addition to the Concourse E addition.

I've reviewed the Port of Portland budget summary and can see they're holding a significant amount of money for the redevelopment in future budgets, but no detail to what this overhaul will consist of.

PDX TCORE update:

As part of TCORE, we’re closing Concourse A and modifying and expanding Concourse B. We will relocate Horizon operations to the end of Concourse C which will allow for the early abandonment of Concourse A. This will allow construction activities on Concourse-B extension to occur and be isolated from passenger processing and travel.

When construction begins on Concourse B later this fall, Horizon will move operations to the end of the C Concourse, which steers travelers away from the construction area and provides more shopping and dining options than are currently available on Concourse A. The relocation of Horizon operations to Concourse C is currently scheduled for October 2019 so that it avoids the peak travel season at PDX.

The Hoffman/Skanska team continues to develop and review schedules to determine early enabling project opportunities and potential tenant impacts. The Concourse B work is progressing through 90% design; the remodeled and expanded Concourse B is expected to open in early 2021.

Interesting, I didn't know they were expanding concourse B also. Concourse A is a cramped building, and with all the growth at Alaska Airlines it's great they're going to improve that area.

I'm wondering what they'll do with American's and Southwest's operations during this move, since they are currently at the end of concourse C? Southwest will be moving to the concourse E extension, but not until 2020.

Sun Country plans pilot base in Oregon
By Mark Reilly – Managing Editor, Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal
10 hours ago

Sun Country Airlines is planning its first pilot base outside of the Twin Cities, with eyes on opening one in Portland.

The Star Tribune reports on the plan by the Eagan-based airline, which first needs to win approval from its pilots' union.

Until now, Sun Country has only had a pilot base (also called a domicile), which is just what it sounds like: The airline's pilots all had to be based and begin and end their work trips in Minneapolis/St. Paul. (Sometimes pilots can live in cities where they aren't based, but that means extra commuting time, which pilots typically aren't reimbursed for.)

Portland to Tokyo every day? Delta seeking nonstop service in 2020
Updated 3 hrs ago; Posted 3 hrs ago
By Andrew Theen | The Oregonian/OregonLive

Delta Airlines is seeking a daily nonstop flight between Portland and Tokyo-Haneda, the Japanese metropolis’ downtown airport.

The airline announced it had applied for a nonstop connection Thursday with the Department of Transportation. If approved, the new line would begin service in 2020, the airline said.

Delta operates Portland’s only nonstop connection to Tokyo-Narita airport five times per week, but it and other airlines are increasingly adding flights to Tokyo-Haneda, which has historically served domestic Japanese passengers but is welcoming more international flights.

The airline also sees an opportunity to continue to foster closer connections between the Pacific Northwest and Japan.

Delta is also seeking daily flights to and from Seattle, Detroit, Atlanta and Honolulu. If approved, Portland would see twice daily flights to Haneda.

According to the application, Portland is “one of the fastest growing U.S. markets to Tokyo.” Delta said it saw a 38 percent compound annual growth rate from 2011 to 2018 in Portland, compared to its average of 21 percent in other American markets. The company did not provide additional data when asked about ridership figures.
Seriously, 2x daily to Haneda? And we keep the Narita flight? Or will that flight go away? Am I missing part of the story here, i.e. is Delta planning on routing more passengers through PDX in the future?

Seeing those growth numbers, too, I wonder how far away we are from a flight to Beijing or Shanghai.

I am so pleased. I have been worried about how viable our Narita flight was as Delta has been neglecting the Narita hub in favor of Seattle as an Asian hub. Giving us Haneda, the closer in airport, is a real vote of confidence in the PDX market.

My understanding is that Delta's application for new service between Haneda and PDX (along with proposed service between HND and SEA, DTW, ATL) had not yet indicated whether the proposed service would replace or supplement existing service to NRT.

I've seen chatter indicating that Delta may wish to move all its Tokyo flights to the more convenient HND and favor its partnership with Korean Air for connecting service to other Asian destinations via Seoul ICN (rather than Tokyo NRT). Others who follow these sorts of developments may have better information.

It will absolutely replace the NRT flight. Assuming Delta gets 4 of their 6 requests (including PDX), the consensus is they will stop flying to NRT at all in 2020.

PDX-HND is a total O/D route, with no connections really to speak of.
Just a lot more convenient for those actually going to Tokyo.

Slight upgague of airplane (767-300ER to A330-200), daily service.
That’s a significant amount of new seats.

And it STILL wouldn’t surprise me to see PDX-ICN in 2020 either on Korean metal (which would be 99% connections to rest of Asia)

Delta is proposing a later departure time from PDX so that connecting passengers from elsewhere in their network can transfer in Portland to HND.

Disappointed that AS isn't applying for flights from PDX and SEA to HND. When this kind of opportunity comes along they should jump at it and get on the offensive again against DL. They must be tired of always being on defense. They could easily lease a couple of aircraft to do the routes.

Alaska doesn’t have long haul aircraft.

If.......PDX were to add Seoul, Shanghai, Paris routes and a couple others not on the radar, will POP begin to consider expansion of the International Terminal? My feeling is that PDX is finally gaining recognition worldwide/nationally as a preferred destination and entry route.

Why is expansion of the the International Terminal (Concourse D) needed? There are 6 gates that are able to feed the FIS immigration and customs station downstairs. When D was built, Delta had many more international flights than PDX has today. The existing gates at the end of D are way underused and that's why you see a lack retail in that area.

That was half my point. Their lack of a long-haul offer basically let Delta waltz into Seattle and build up market share. It is killing Alaska. Instead of leasing some long-haul aircraft and fighting Delta they wasted a few hundred million, as well as organization focus and resources, on the Virgin America acquisition. Now they have this golden opportunity to get into Haneda from both Seattle and Portland and they still sit on their hands. Leasing long-haul aircraft is not that difficult and several airlines are struggling financially and are willing to sell aircraft.

Looks nice, but, I still don't get why 4 gates are shown.
B already has 3..

I thought it was going to 5 or 6?

--
They just remodeled the B area like a year ago... so, no idea why it needs a whole new addition for one gate.
Was expecting 5...

Ugh, maybe I'm confused.
