SkyTrain Station Renovations

I actually don't mind Metrotown Station that much. Yes, there should have been better weatherproofing, and I feel like they could have sculpted the terrain to make the bus loop less of a chokepoint (technically Burnaby's fault for both not letting that happen and also for the missing / orphan pedestrian overpasses)... but otherwise it's a well-balanced and symmetric design in my eyes. The same cannot be said for the incongruous alterations that were carried out at New Westminster.

While some of the original Expo Line stations have been unfortunately butchered, I think we can still save the following ones. All of them do need quite the deep-cleaning, however.

- Burrard (platform)
- Granville
- Nanaimo
- Patterson
- Royal Oak
- 22nd Street

On the other hand, some stations need a lot of work and might not be worth saving in the long run. I'm thinking...

- 29th Avenue could use more entrances e.g. to Renfrew / Earles St
- Edmonds could use better connectivity to the residential towers to the south

For the future... I'm not sure what to prefer as a design direction. I'd argue that the Evergreen Line stations are a good cookie-cutter template, although with a different kit of parts. And I also like having the variety of station designs. Perhaps a mix of the two is appropriate? That is to say, infill stations can use a consistent design, while major nodes could use more freedom and leeway?

I mentioned earlier about a long promised ramp for the south side of Edmonds Station. I'm hoping they get around to doing it when they do the area transit planning (Burnaby / New West is coming up this year). Otherwise I'm not holding my breath it'll happen during my lifetime...

You could say that the new platform is the M line 'side'.. you can follow the yellow stripes to get to the M line platforms?

Well it's pretty clear at the height and how the elevator shaft was designed that it's a "safety" feature so no one walks into it. I guess the same logic goes for giant white and red metal poles.

Joyce Station update:

Partial access has been opened up for the west stationhouse: It is exit only, and leads to the other side of Joyce Street. Completed staircase with view of the foyer area, which is still under construction. Stairs then lead to two Compass tap-outs (similar to what we saw at Metrotown before everything was opened up) and then to a set of doors equipped with panic-style handles.

What is the material used for the wall besides the escalators? It looks 'dirty'.

The wall is polished concrete. Looks better than the picture shows.

So they only renovated/built one new entrance? What about the rest of the station. Still looks like a dump.

As far as I know Surrey Central got a new entrance but not any aesthetic upgrades. In the future, the bus loop and the stairs attached to it will be demolished as the bus loop will be relocated to be "around the block" sort of. SFU owns the parking lot in front of Surrey Central and the bus loop and they will be converted into new SFU buildings.

I'd imagine, given this and the other new developments coming to the area, that the rest of Surrey Central will be getting a facelift at some point.

I went through Broadway today on the expo line and there was lots of pigeon droppings in spots and a number of pigeons where they can find a spot

This first phase was necessary. Without it, the other entrances / exits could not be renovated.
