LOL! I'd be truly shocked if even 0.05% of people factor that into where they live. As long as there are sidewalks people will be happy.

A lot of the info posted over there is coming from public sources so it's crazy for anyone to think it's insider info. No one is going to risk their jobs or getting sued by posting insider info so a small group of urbanistas can get off.
Yes and no. Many people did like Surrealplace's updates, but SSP was already on a downward slope. I think you're right in that his is leaving didn't help, and was maybe the beginning of the end. As for updates and info at SRC. Yeah, some of it's public info, but there is also a lot of info coming out before it's public, compared to none at all here, there *may* be renderings of projects not public yet that many of the members share. The site has added about 30 or 40 users just in the last 6 months. It's vibrant with construction discussion and updates. I like the discussion there. Some of the members are architects, developers or in the construction industry, and it's nice. SRC seems to have ties into the industry as they are invited to the ground breaking and roof topping ceremonies etc.. Suburbia was reveling in how he posted a video of some project up before it was up at SRC. Meanwhile every other project in the city has had more recent updates at SRC. The quality and quantity of updates at SRC is light years ahead. It's not even close.

Is the discussion light years ahead? I think so, but it's only my opinion. It depends on what you like. SSP is more free flowing and more of a general gab session and some people prefer that. For the record I'm not trying to convince anyone to go to SRC. Those who would likely go, have already gone (about 3 dozen of the people listed above). Some people prefer the discussion here, and I get that. SRC isn't for everyone.

That's a pretty low standard. A sidewalk that doesn't get you anywhere in a reasonable amount of time but to more houses in your neighbourhood and hopefully the school grounds. Everything else requires a vehicle.

That's reality for Calgary. It's why ~85% of the people live in suburbs. Newer developments are very walkable but the Walk Score criteria are so ridiculous I'm surprised any area would do well.

That’s a pretty strong argument. I’m convinced.

Put a spin on it anyway you like, but surrealplaces left because he was a quitter. Couldn’t take a bit of spicy conversation so he took his ball and went home. The others who left were people easily amused by a few photos.

That and he sold out basically. The rumor is he left because he got greedy and went for the money.

Here a spin on it. He left because of you and Suburbia.

Pot calling kettle black. It’s clear you and the other people currently posting here regularly are the ones amused by a few photos. Photos of the same two single family homes, hundreds of Crescent Rd panoramas, and porta potties.

I agree for the most part. For construction info and discussion SRC is better. Like 100 times better. SSP still has some good threads, like the airport thread or the roads thread. Also nice to get pics of the odd mansion or two. I do like the general discussion here, there’s a little more sizzle to it. I don’t mind a little bit of smack talk, keeps things interesting.

It’s something I heard through the grapevine. SRC offered him money to leave, or something to that effect. I don’t know how much, but he sold out chasing after the corporate buck.

And don’t forget nice tall ceilings. There’s no way you’re getting those kind of ceilings in an apartment condo. That is unless you’re in a penthouse and paying $5million bucks.

All the new suburbs are fine for a walk ability, they all have nicely laid out sidewalks and you never have to walk very far to get to the nearest grocery store, shopping plaza bus stop or park.
You can also walk along nature trails or bike paths without having to worry about stepping on needles or getting mugged, or stepping through a puddle urine. I bet they don’t factor that into the walk ability scores.

Except you forgot something. The place you posted is only 1100 ft.², about the size of my garage. For 500k you can do a lot better elsewhere.

And here's the balcony view...ouch. looking at a bunch of nasty AC units. Also might not want to have more than two people out there at the same time.

Found this unit in a newer building for sale at $464K in the Beltline, because the building in Suburgatory's example was an old junk heap. Looks decent in the pics. Then I notice it's only 870 square feet! Okay, not good value, but not absolutely terrible. It gets worse though, then I notice the condo fees are $568.00/month....whoa! Hang on a minute. That extra $568.00/month is like having another $118,000 added onto the mortgage, so the price is more like $582,000 and here's the best part. You never pay that portion off, they only go higher.

I'm suddenly feeling queasy.
