I know our household love various types of fromages and we know a lot about cheeses (more so than some I would suppose) but we also like a Kraft single once in a while, nonetheless this is the most hilarious post I've read here in a long time. Cheers to that! LOL

Potential Sobeys closure CF Champlain

I'm going to leave this here.
It seems the Closure of the CF Champlain location is still on the table.

I know a few Sobeys employees at CF Champlain, and it turns out there where plans to shut down that location leaving the Regis as the only Location in NW Dieppe Since the 2 stores seem to have similar floor plans with the Regis location being of a slightly off layout. Both have a little over 32,000 Sq FT. There is also the fact there are apparently staff who have been asked if they would like to get transferred despite neither location having the full staff they used to.

I wonder what is going to happen with this. The closure was actually first connected to the Dieppe Blvd Sobeys before the Coop buy out that happen. As they wanted to transfer most managers of the Champlain Location to Dieppe Blvd. But that does come from staff, and not higher ups.

I've always found it peculiar that there are two Sobeys so close together (Champlain & Regis Street) and have had fun in the past speculating on potential fantasy expansions to the west end of the mall including the Sobeys space.

In the past, I have assumed that the mall based store might close if a new store was built on Dieppe Blvd. I still believe this is the only circumstance that would provoke a closure of the mall store.

At present, any rumours regarding a closure of the mall based Sobeys are just pure conjecture. I have no evidence that this will happen. The CF Champlain store in fact is the closest we have in Moncton to the "Sobeys Extra" format, which is present in Halifax, Saint John and Fredericton. In other words I don't think any closure is imminent in any shape or form.

The mall retail sector is pretty weak nationwide. The very topmost malls are performing well (like Yorkdale and Eaton Centre), but the only mall in the Maritimes which fits in this lofty company is perhaps HSC in Halifax, and even it seems to have permanent vacancies, and has yet to solve the problem of it's empty Sears store. At least CF Champlain was able to fill it's Sears space with the TD Corporate Banking Centre.

So, if Sobeys were ever to leave the mall, it might create a vacancy very difficult to fill. The remaining department stores in the country like Bay and Simons would likely not be interested. Other larger retailers like Forever 21 are not expanding as aggressively as before and even stalwarts like H&M are scaling back.

CF Champlain continues to do well, but it remains only an upper level 2nd tier type shopping centre, not quite in the big leagues, and would struggle to find a replacement for Sobeys. We should all hope that the status quo is maintained.......

Both locations might have the same Sq FT(though I think Regis is smaller ) but the selection at Regis is nowhere near the selection at the mall location. During sales I can never find most of the stock at Regis and a trip to the mall is required. Until the figure out enough spacing for all products in the Regis store removing the Champlain location would be detrimental in my opinion.

This the Manager of the mall had said if it where built higher up Champlain Street they could have built either Larger Sq Ft with a parking structure, or multi level building with all in one, and be able to compete with HSC in Halifax, Yorkdale, and Eaton Centre.

I do agree that they have less quantity at the Regis store.

But the original plans would have been a full scale renovation. From what I've understood is there was a plan to purchase 642 Acadie Avenue, and Build a Vaughan Harvey styled Sobeys, NBLC, and Subway, Maritime Beauty, TD Bank. As the Vaughan Harvey location's Goodlife Fitness, and The Shoe Tree.

About a decade ago, a vp at Sobey's told me the Regis Street store and mall store's square footage. I can't recall them now, but Regis was noticeably smaller, though not as much as I expected as I always thought it was a LOT smaller.
Anyway, the interesting he told me was that despite the smaller size and lower selection, the Regis St. store outsold the mall store per square foot, which is an important measure in the retail biz.

It’s all on the Crombie REIT website as they do own both buildings, acquired in 2008. (I assume this is similar to how Sears Canada used to own their building)
Champlain Sobeys is 51886 sq/ft and Regis is 25477 sq/ft.
So Scarface, neither store is close to having “a little over 32000 sq/ft.” One is literally double the size of the other.

Please guys, if you’re going to post something like this, do you homework, it’s not that hard.

I agree. It's important to be as factual as possible in your posts, especially since a lot of people keep an eye on what we discuss here (over 1.8 million views and counting).

It's OK to speculate, as long as you are crystal clear that what you are posting is speculative (or even fanciful, if your post is a "what if" scenario). People should be aware however if our posts are simply rumours or whimsy. If your post is not absolutely factual, let people know.

We don't want SSP to be a source of misinformation.

According to this article:

https://www.nbcnews.com/business/busines...HfmE4f9gnIsmTqyCjc3W2PvAPoOmqsxSASra5o08

Payless Shoe Source is on the verge of it's second bankruptcy and the closure of all 2,500 stores in North America may be on the table. This could include their location in CF Champlain.

Further to the above:

Payless ShoeSource to close remaining 2,100 stores in U.S.
ASSOCIATED PRESS Updated: February 15, 2019

NEW YORK — Payless ShoeSource is shuttering all of its 2,100 remaining stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, joining a list of iconic names like Toys R Us and Bon-Ton that have closed down in the last year.

The Topeka, Kansas-based chain said Friday it will hold liquidation sales starting Sunday and wind down its e-commerce operations. All of the stores will remain open until at least the end of March and the majority will remain open until May.

The debt-burdened chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April 2017, closing hundreds of stores as part of its reorganization.

No mention of the Canadian stores, but my gut tells me that they will be shuttered too. Nobody has any particular sentimental attachment to Payless (not like Toys R Us.......).

The Canadian arm seems to be directly connected to the American one including the same customer service line and help center so you may be right that an announcement for the Canada side of the business might be imminent

Too bad. I feel for the employees, but I never liked the stores personally.

And in other new, the Pur & Simple at CF Champlain is apparently planning on opening in April.

The CRU between Cazza Petites and Le Chateau at CF Champlain now has construction drywall up. No word yet on any prospective tenant.

There is a rumour out there that the work being done on the CRU between Cazza and Le Chateau will be in conjunction with the new Pur & Simple, i.e. - an expanded seating area and a new interior mall entrance on one of the main corridors.

An intriguing concept, and not beyond the realm of possibility. This however remains a rumour, and there is no confirmatory evidence that I'm aware of. We'll have to keep an eye on this one.........

We don't have any of these in New Brunswick, but HBC is closing all Home Outfitters - Déco-Découvertes stores in Canada. Not surprisingly, I don't really believe they were doing well overall and the Hudson's Bay Company said they want to cut costs and concentrate on better performing divisions; Hudson's Bay stores and Saks. They also plan on closing underperforming locations of Saks Off 5th, which is the discount division of flagship brand Saks Fifth Avenue which is actually doing well.

Lord & Taylor in the States is another HBC storied division that is struggling. Est. 1826

In any event it doesn't change much of anything in our neck of the woods, but it's good for them to get rid of things that don't work, being the oldest company in North America they must reinvent themselves all the time, they surely have changed since 1670...

Lord & Taylor in New York City is indeed closing. They have signs in their windows thanking all their customers for their past loyalty. The people there are devastated but times change, especially in years like these.

Quilts Etc at CF Champlain is closing for renovations (and rebranding).

It will reopen in April as QE Home.
