I really love that Edmonton proposal but I too am surprised it would be built in Edmonton.


You can definately see the need for such an infill in Tor/Mon/Van where developable downtown land is scarce. Such is not the case in Edmonton where even with the flurry of towers that have gone up in the last few years there are still huge swaths of the downtown covered with parking lots.

When I first saw the balconies I thought the upper floors were parking levels. I thought it was so strange since usually parking is on the lower floors. I clued in once I realized how narrow they were.

I'd like the design more if the balconies were a contrasting colour. Maybe a hard black. And the black should continue down to the modern side of the lower half. That would give the impression that the balconies and newer side were like a stake being driven into an existing building. If your major design feature is juxtaposition, it should be a really intense and dramatic.

i think for people outside of Edmonton you see loads of surface parking lots that would be easier to develop and why would one take on a more challenging location.

This is one of the most complete blocks in the middle of central Edmonton... the notion that people 'cannot believe' that this can happen here, or in any city for that matter, is ridiculous.

Second phase of the Oakridge Centre development:

This second development permit application consists of Southeast corner of the site at Cambie and 45th, currently home to the Safeway and surface parking lot.

Details of this phase of the project include:

Three towers, 32, 17 and 34-storeys in height;
615 condo units;
199 one-bedrooms, 326 two-bedrooms and 90 three(+)-bedrooms;
a podium containing retail and office uses;
358,397 SF of retail space including new below-grade grocery and liquor store;
119,582 SF of office space;

That's painful. It's just as inviting as the current site for a pedestrian, except for the entrance to the plaza.

Does it come with a complimentary service that drives you from one end of the podium to the other?

How many football fields long is that? Better, how many bus stops long is it?

Other than that, I dig the cruise ship architecture

Can somebody explain the naming of the streets in Edmonton? How can they all be NW? Are there also 103,104,105,106 SE for example?

Oh jeez, this place will be awfully strange to visit in a couple years....and not in a good way. Those podiums really need to be more scaled with the street...along with the towers.
