Scotiabank paying $70 million per year for the rights to Scotiabank Arena is a game changer for the entire country.

Couldn't they have put a little effort into the mock ups? LOL I'll believe it when I see it. There's plenty to suggest PBA Lands is not capable of a development this expansive.

I wonder if in 20 years, people will still refer to it as the Air Canada Centre.

No question, but at the same time no other sports venue in Canada has the kind of profile that Scotiabank has... there are probably close to 100 NBA/NHL event nights alone, before you even get into the big concerts and other special events held there.

Rogers Centre must be in the same ballpark with the large number of baseball games and other high profile events there, but I would think it drops off after that.

Thanks for the data.

Abbotsford makes sense on some levels, as it's the GVRD's secondary arena for the inland areas, and the absence of a significant sports tenant means that conflicts are seldom an issue.

Similarly, MTS Centre used to do huge concert numbers before the return of the NHL cut into that significantly. Adding the AHL to the mix (which soaks up another 40-odd dates a year) has also probably hit their concert business further.

Considering how often they use it in their TV shows, I'll bet it will become The CW Place Stadium.

Or maybe the WB Place. Or the DC Place.

That way they only have to change 1 letter and move another for the signs.

I thought it was 40m per year... a 20 year deal for 800m.

I think maybe Abbotsford gets a lot of the smaller/mid-size shows/events that don't go to Rogers Arena Downtown Van.

I realize there is a decent population in the area but isn't it a bit of a hike from areas west of the Fraser and the north shore to serve as a true regional alternative to Rogers for the Lower Mainland?

This was my understanding as well. Perhaps users from BC can chime in but I see Abbotsford more as the main-ish location for the Fraser Valley than as a second, smaller Vancouver location for events and shows. Serves as a pretty good central location for everything between Langley, Mission, and Chilliwack.

One cutoff is whether you live around transit or not. If you live out in Langley and drive everywhere you're probably more likely to go to Abbotsford. If you live in Vancouver proper chances you even own a car are not that high and getting out to Abbotsford is a huge pain.

I don't think the numbers mean all that much because they include only a portion of events and there are no dollar values attached, and they only include what was reported. One ticket can be $20 and another can be $300. And then there is the question of what share of time is dedicated to sports vs concerts. I doubt it makes sense to think of Abbotsford's arena as being 1/4 as busy as Scotiabank in Toronto.

Looking just at a place like the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, they've got a capacity of 1,000 and they probably put on 100 shows a year. Some cities like Vancouver have a lot of venues like that for concerts and others just have the arena. That is another difference. Personally, I avoid arena concerts.

When you throw in sporting events attendance, Toronto would be pushing 2 million a year...

I added what leagues are tenants next to the concert event figures.

Again, i'm not 100% sure and i'd take the numbers with a grain of salt for reasons pointed out earlier in this thread. It's simply a ranking for the sake of having a general idea of activity for each.

Few more details on the proposed Halifax stadium in this CBC article:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-...rops-1.5006177

"Anthony LeBlanc, the founding partner of the would-be Atlantic Schooners team, said the estimated cost is now in the ballpark of $120 million to $140 million, down from a previous estimate of $170 million to $190 million.
...
Those details include changing some of the seating in the upper deck to benches and adding general admission areas for about 4,000. The capacity of the domed stadium would still be 24,000, LeBlanc said.
...
LeBlanc said he has been meeting with municipal CAO Jacques Dubé every couple of weeks and shared the group's business plan verbally with him a couple of weeks ago. A written business case will be submitted to the municipality very soon, LeBlanc said.

The group expects costs to be split roughly fifty-fifty between private businesses and public bodies once the construction debt and operating costs are factored in. Operating the facility will cost $3 million to $4 million per year, an expense that will be covered by LeBlanc's group."

In terms of cities sticking out, Calgary definitely does too. Rogers Place does triple the concert business.
