I was not aware of this. In this case this is similar to the large piece of land in the Old Port of Montreal that is used by the Cirque du Soleil for 6 weeks in the summer but that is unused the rest of the year. It's always strange to see that no man's land right on the waterfront.

What iteration are we on now, the 4th? Don't Flamers fans find it strange that the ownership group is not asking for a new arena? If I was a fan I know I would. The city can constantly come out with a new game plan every 6 months and the owners don't care....hmmmm.....pretty obvious what they are planning......

Toronto has shitloads of waterfront as prime as this. This isn't on the waterfront. It's cut off from the waterfront by a high speed boulevard and a provincially owned artificial island complex. The conceptual long term vision is to improve the connections between these institutions by building over the boulevard and pursuing partnerships to developing research and development facilities on the underutilized spaces. This would involve the city's CNE board and the province working together. lol

Calgary is not Edmonton. People down there are smart enough to recognize a bad deal when they see it so are probably not as willing to buy an arena for a group of millionaires on the public dime

This will be the first news since the Olympics bid fell through. As much as I know Coilers fans would be happy to see their much more successful southern counterparts leave the province, I don’t think that’s gonna happen any time soon. Especially after a season like this.

Oh you think the Flamers majority shareholder - M.Edwards gives 2 craps about the city? You know he lives in London England as a way tax evasion don't you.. common knowledge.....he'd sell his soul if it made him a buck. Not sure what a pseudo "decent" season has to do with moving the team or not......

Sorry, all NHL ownership groups are billionaires......not sure what you meant to imply with that one....

Murray Edwards is a greedy, tax evading scumbag for sure. I know all about his residence in London. Wasn’t another element of his moving there to do with K.D. Lang stealing his wife though? In any case his greed is what will keep the Flames here. They are one of the most lucrative teams in the league in a proven market. Furthermore, his ownership group doesn’t just own the Flames, they own the Stamps and the Roughnecks too. Unless they plan on moving those aswell, moving the Flames doesn’t make a lot of sense as they get tons of advertising and corporate money being the only sports franchise owners in Calgary. Their last big threat was moving to Seattle. That was clearly a bluff.

Just because Edmontonians were foolish enough to let Katz bend them over a barrel doesn’t mean we are.

Nice passive aggressive comment about the team right behind the Lightning in points having a “pseudo ‘decent’ season”. They haven’t had a season like this since they won the cup in ‘89. Quit being bitter because your team has no vision, no leadership and no future while Katz owns them. McJesus couldn’t save them all on his own.

The comment about billionaires was in response to another post calling the ownership group millionaires.

Living in London to evade taxes? That's like buying a Volvo because it's cheaper than an Audi. If you're going to evade taxes, try Barbados (like the Sens' owner and come back to Canada for a free liver transplant).

No matter what their net worth is, I would hardly call a person who has given over $17 million to various causes a scumbag.

Giving History

Philanthropic donor gives primarily to educational and healthcare causes. Lifetime giving exceeds $17 million. Recipients include: the University of Saskatchewan, the University of Manitoba, the University of Calgary and Alberta Children's Hospital. Chairman of the N. Murray Edwards Charitable Foundation. In 2013, the foundation had assets exceeding $21 million and donated more than $700,000; gives primarily to educational, healthcare and social causes. At the University of Toronto, along with four others, he endowed the Chair in Law and Economics. In 2003, he established the N. Murray Edwards Market Information Centre at the Haskayne School of Business, which provides real time financial information for business students and faculty.

Not to mention his investments in developing technology to prevent climate change, partnering with Bill Gates:

Interesting Facts

Bill Gates and Edwards had stake worth $10 million in Carbon Engineering, a Canadian geo-engineering company with an air capture process to manage the carbon emissions in the atmosphere.

Not an announcement per say. The expectation was that council was going to prioritize their major infrastructure projects (including an arena).

Turns out they kicked the can down the road til April. Typical.
