If you cannibalized the bike path / sidewalk on the bridges over the Thames River and CP rail, you could fit in a third lane each way.

However, if the structures weren't designed to handle that much weight, expensive strengthening projects would be needed. Still cheaper than new bridges however, although new small pedestrian/bike only bridges would need to be made parallel.

As for the CN rail underpass, a third lane could split from the main road to go around the support columns. A couple tunnels could be dug to the sides for new sidewalks/bike paths.

Hopefully the project includes some dual-left turn lanes too. Widening doesn't reduce the turning lane queues too much.

Some of the comments about road network planning failures are spot on. Hopefully this city engineering and traffic planners finally wake up and do their job and start seriously thinking about our network and road needs for 50 years plus. Middlesex county is looking at the future of Glendon Dr out to 402. The west end of London will see major population growth in the next 50 years and the road network is sadly lacking.

The comparison that the bike guy makes in that article between induced demand and obesity is stupid. So if clothing manufacturers decide to stop making larger clothes, people would have to get smaller by necessity, I guess. Where the traffic comes from is people not finding alternate routes around the screwed up big road. When Southdale finally gets widened to the west, I won't be as tempted to cut through Westmount to get to Commissioners to get to Byron, for example.

Bike lanes are already there on Wonderland north from Commissioners and I am certainly in favour of adding them to the south of that. I don't necessarily think that will drive more people out of their cars and on to bikes (at least not to any number that would be noticeable by lack of car traffic), but it certainly adds to their safety. And as for bus lanes. Well, BRT, if it ever gets off the ground, isn't even slated for Wonderland, and I wouldn't be in favour of adding dedicated bus lanes for regular LTC service (that bus only left turn lane on Sarnia road is a waste of space considering how infrequent the buses are and how long the car left turn line usually is). If after Wonderland is widened, and BRT happens and proves itself and the city looks at expanding it to the west end, then Wonderland already will have the space to put in BRT lanes and still leave 4 car lanes. I mean, I know by that point, people will be used to 6 car lanes and will cause an uproar at the suggestion of taking away lanes for buses. But if BRT proves to be the great success everyone talks about, then at least there will be something real to point at to say why it will be a good idea and it will work on Wonderland as well.

Hey, things are (slowly) getting better.

Wonderland needs to be 6 lanes if BRT happens- it needs to absorb traffic from the lanes taken out of Richmond and whatnot.

Bradley is slowly being extended - so more through roads.

VMP extension happening soon - so more through roads. Eventually maybe some interchanges.

Big Box Barf is everywhere these days, London can't avoid it. But we are getting a lot of infill projects, which is nice.

Good, but ironic, now that finally Wharncliffe has been widened north of Oxfart. I take it more than ever before, to avoid the (weekend/rush hour) traffic of that "highway" (parking lot) known as Wonderland.
