I don't care much about large houses either, but quite often it is a case of jealousy. It's human nature for a certain percentage of people to be jealous of someone with lots of money, fancy cars, large houses, etc... I have a few friends who are left winger types that constantly put down anyone or anything involving riches. Sometimes I think it's those people who are compensating.

Thank you. That’s what I’ve been trying to say all along, that there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s just human nature to be jealous of those who have more. And if people weren’t jealous, and weren’t interested in attending more, we’d be nothing as a society.

Whenever people see a big mansion being built, they should be thankful.

I don't care what it is as long as it's not another mansion.

It's zoned for multi-family, so not expecting a mansion.

I checked the title on the Spin 2 system
http://alta.registries.gov.ab.ca/SpinII/MapIndex.aspx?MapFindType=Address

I don't know a lot about titles but it lists a land transfer in 2015, but then a change/cancel date of 28/09/2018

Not sure what that indicates exactly. Can a land transfer be 'cancelled' 3 years later?

Honestly, that is a really stupid article, and especially from a Realtor. Not many Realtors would agree with that assessment. And trying to link a large house to destruction of the planet...I mean c'mon. If all 7 Billion people on the planet had a 10,000 sq foot house, it would be bad...but that's not the case.

I passed this on to my wife for a look, and she said if something was to get built there it would likely be a multi-family project of 3-5 storeys.

Given the discussion about this MFH site, it got me wondering about the difference between wood-frame construction versus steel beam.

Anyone have a synopsis on which is:
1.) less expensive,
2.) takes less time to build,
3.) is a better choice for the environment, and
4.) has less longer term maintenance / longer life?

On a somewhat related note, I've also heard of some people using one or two steel beams in their wood frame construction single family homes so as to reduce the need for a post. I've not actually seen this myself. Any thoughts on this IE any real downside?

Not literally, but yes in a roundabout way the entrepreneurs of the world are people who make things happen. If not for people like that we’d be living in the feudal system, or a country like Russia. So yes, you need to be thankful.

The most likely scenario is a small multi-family building. What kind of construction activity?

Downside is getting the heavy steel beam in place. On new builds not as difficult but Reno’s can be a challenge. No real downside to having more open space though. We also installed them so they were flush, no bulkheads and no posts if done properly. We did it in some houses so that we created a tunnel for all the HVAC and electrical to be run and entire basement had a flat ceiling. Way nicer. That was a large Reno in both size and cost though. Can’t do that on lower cost Reno’s.

You need to strike balance. Yes, entrepreneurial peeps are needed, and in many ways should be thanked, as they take all the risk in building businesses. People hate on the rich businessmen who have made it, but don't know about the other 75% of businessmen who took a risk and failed. Still, social programs and equality are needed.

I’m getting a sense that it might be a multi family project.

Was up around the airport the other day and was surprised at how much is going on. I've got a few update photos and will post later.

Doesn't matter if finished properly

I'm really surprised how many hotels are up there, and with more being built.

North of the airport is warehouse city! I hope they are all getting filled.

Not far from the airport is Calgary Transit's new natural gas bus facility. Had been completely off radar for me till a few months ago when I saw it off Stoney.
