Great photos! Thanks!!

Very sad to see any part of this building demolished. That upper portion added balance to the building and was a very key element to the overall appeal and design. I realize it's logistically very difficult to retain it and integrate it into the new towers, however.

It was never intended to have that stubby addition. Here is the original unbuilt version.

Thanks Changing City, I posted that pic a while back as I thought that's how the redevelopment should have been designed, although the perspective in the rendering is exaggerated.

They could have even built two towers similar to that, one near Georgia and one near Dunsmuir. Would have payed homage to the original design far better.

Thanks for the pics!

So the only other building downtown with a rooftop "pod" is the Telus Building on Seymour.

The bas-relief sculpture by the Homer Street entrance has been cut into pieces and removed. The flag person nearby confirmed for me that it will be cleaned, restored and reinstalled on the Hamilton Street side.

If you look at the original plans in the heritage report, they had massive escalators throughout the building, and the older plans (which would have had large retailers in there) would have re-used those escalators.

Over a decade ago I did some work in the building.

Its a gem!

The most memorable item; hidden floors.

The service elevator could be locked off between floors, and doors pushed open manually. This revealed a narrow, probably about 4ft tall floor, between floors.

The purpose of this was to access what essentially amounted to a "duct" network that had little openings that opened everywhere, this would allow security staff to crawl around and spy on on the sorting staff below to spot any theft or misconduct.

These tunnels also lead to all sorts of neat storage areas and weird nooks with vintage items for days. Post war furniture and desks, brilliant stuff.

The building was truly strange, but a gem no doubt.

LOL that was prior to the invention of CCTV cameras I reckon. Didn't know KGB-like facilities existed in this building.

Any bets whether we'll see our first Eataly (sic?) here?

I love that this is happening.

Its pretty unique to have something this size come together in the centre of town.

Great for everyone as far as I'm concerned.

...so what happened to that proposal? Not stable enough? I doubt view cones would be a concern, there are taller buildings around there.

I don't think that view cones were a thing back in the 50s.
