I'd like to see renderings too. Before taking down this tower, they should have to prove they're putting up a worthy successor.

They've already chosen the "action" design, that's why it's going through approvals now.Thr "no action" option is only if there is no approval, or text amendment.

That's not how it works. For one thing who gets to decide what is worthy or not? There was no design test when this building replaced the tower before it.

But the easiest test to decide which tower would be most suitable for the company and the site: would anyone take down the new, larger, and modern tower and replace it with this memory of yesteryear?

I'd at least like to know what we're getting. Sorry not sorry.

I think we'd all love that. But the reality is, we won't know until it goes public. Unless you happen to have a direct line to Jamie Dimon's office...

If not for what he's doing to a skyscraper that I really like, I think I'd really like Jamie Dimon.

What we're getting is a new state-of-the-art headquarters for a major company that will remain in Midtown east, which is exactly what the city hoped for when the rezoning was approved. Whether or not anyone approves of the design is irrelevant. Besides, it's not as if the current tower is something great. I say again, New York, and midtown itself, is not some open museum for us to look at. It's a functioning city. The buildings have function. The current building doesn't serve Chase's needs, so they will replace it with one that does. The current tower also replaced a building that was there before.

What are the odds of a large, sloping parapet and a spire reaching past the WTC?

Go big or go home, right Chase?

I would say zero chance. But the new building itself won't be under construction until next year, we'll be dealing with the demo until then. So I'm sure the design will be refined further, but as it stands, count on either of the two here, the taller version being what they would build if approval of the text amendment fails, which I don't expect it to.

Seems to be a slightly older clip.

Right, but the 1,400 foot mark is just the roof of the building, correct? Can't they do anything they want with the parapet? What's stopping them from adding a spire/cool looking crown? They could easily make this one of the top ten tallest buildings in the world.

That's unfortunate about the taller tower not being likely but hopefully we'll see something 1,600+ rise on one of the adjacent sites in the future.

The Freedom Tower is nearly 400 ft higher than that. They're not gonna build a parapet or crown that tall unless the design is changed drastically.

I know it is, but a sloping crown + spire could be 400+ feet.

How do we know it's not part of the design yet? Since that's just the massing (excluding the crown/spire).

In the age of megascrapers you'd think Chase would go all out, I mean 1,400+ is obviously nice and I'm not complaining but it doesn't put it ahead of other NY skyscrapers.

Some people (businesses) don’t care about height...just maximizing space and efficiency for employees.

Chace would probably build a 100m building if it met their needs.

I know, but if it's already over 1,400 feet it makes it a lot easier to break barriers.

They're not trying to break "barriers". They've been searching for a new headquarters for years. It just so happens that this is what it came down to for Chase - demolishing the existing building, and utilizing the midtown east rezoning to build a new headquarters tower to fill its needs. As it is, they're choosing to build a shorter version than what they could because that is what fills their needs. Early estimates were for a building of about 1,200 ft. Of course, the reality of designing a new tower of that size at that location produced a higher tower.

Gale Brewer has finally come out with her unfavorable and conditional review (she drew it out until the last day), so now it's on to City Planning...

I know they're not, but a little more ambition would be nice. I mean yea I know we're spoiled so I'm maybe just being a bit ridiculous

I hope they consider an elevated, open public space ala the Elevated Acre downtown. I know this is a concept discussed for Park Avenue in the past, could be the perfect site, albeit obviously on a smaller scale. One can dream.

Do Brewer's points about the need for more public space at the base space mean we could end up getting the taller option tower?

You go girl lol!
