I'm not against public art. I'm against the horrible Glockenspiel that like 15 people want. It's expensive, annoying and has no redeeming qualities.

Go pay a real artist to put some sculptures in the park if we want to support the arts.

Don't know if it's been discussed before, but I'm really excited for the Harbour Landing Popeye's Chicken. Looks like it's almost ready to open.

In other random news, SaskPower tore down this lovely old little substation in Cathedral.

I have no idea about the state of/make-up of the building, but it would have made a nice little shop for the neighbourhood. Hopefully something other than a parking lot shows up.

I was surprised at this demolition. It was a unique little building, especially on a block with unremarkable buildings. Sad.

A similar building in Saskatoon, just off of Broadway on Main Street, houses an architecture firm. The 'historic' red brick facade and design is very much like the one torn down in Regina. It really is too bad....

I'll say that Krovemaker is typically best ignored because he's a crank who will support any old building. If the lot is well developed I'll be happy, but it's unlikely.

Regina’s South Ring Road will be a mess again this summer (2019) a tender on Sask tenders is about to close this month that will see both the north and southbound bridges over the Wascana creek be completely torn down and redone, as they have reached their lifespans.

Hope that Bypass will be open south side to allow trucks go around by the time they start!

It would be insanity to do this before the new bypass is open.

Well with the amount of paving they got done last year, it is feasible to be open by Early June. But will it...

Synopsis:
Sealed Tenders marked "Ring Road Northbound and Southbound over Wascana Creek Bridge Replacements - Tender No. 4513" using the submission label (Appendix E) will be received by the City of Regina at the 5th Floor, Purchasing Branch or Main Floor, Ambassadors Desk at City Hall, 2476 Victoria Avenue, P.O. Box 1790, Regina, Saskatchewan, S4P 3C8, no later than 2:00 P.M. Central Standard Time, January 24, 2019.

The major items of work are as follows:

Design, installation, maintenance, and removal of temporary paved crossovers;
Design, setup, maintenance, and removal of traffic control devices;
Remove existing asphalt, girders, bridgerails, and approach guardrails;
Demolish existing abutments, piers, and retaining walls;
Drive new abutment and pier piles;
Pour new concrete abutments and wingwalls;
Install new precast concrete pier caps and box girders;

Additional Information:
Pour new concrete deck overlay, approach slabs, barriers, and drainage troughs;
Apply waterproofing membrane and place asphalt on bridge;
Install new bridgerails and approach guardrails;
Apply sealers;
Widen embankments and roadways;
Repave approach roadways; and

The city said that the repairs to the Assiniboine-Ring Road flyover were delayed bc they will be done the same time as the Wascana Creek bridge work.

Ughh. Fantastic. What they need to do is completely overhaul the Ring Road there, dig it down so that the overpass has 5 m clearance instead of the 4.5 it currently has. It's constantly dinged by trucks.

Appears they changed their minds, unless a Tender to redo that bridge comes out?

Should happen less when most of the trucks are using the bypass.

Do you think it is also time to widen the bridge to 3 lanes northbound to support a future 3rd lane north from Wascana Parkway to Assiniboine offramp. This would be a forward looking enhancement rather than replacing only to have to redo again in a couple years.

I can't see the city doing it. Look at the mess with the Arcola bridge. They should've widened it.

The city is still claiming the flyover is in that project despite no mention in the tender.

I agree. The City is not forward looking on these projects. Potential projects come up in a long-term plan documents years or even decades before the engineering is completed. Once the engineering is done and the funding from other levels of government is in place, they are locked in. They are building infrastructure without regard to current, let alone future, needs.

I fear the Winnipeg street overpass replacement is another of these. The focus should be instead on the adjacent rail crossings. When the overpass replacement was originally envisioned there were far fewer trains on those tracks.

Completely agreed. When the city did the Broad Street Bridge over the lake they should have widened it the three meters for bike lanes which would have continued from Wascana Parkway, but they didn't. They can't even do the easy wins properly why would they do the more difficult ones any better.

YWCA wants to build a new facility in Cathedral. $35-million facility at the site of the former Victoria School and Lucy Eley Park. (A block north of Victoria between Rae and Retallack). City would gift the land.
