Elsewhere on campus, condo towers have been no taller than 20 storeys, with many at about four or five storeys, said Murray McCutcheon, a resident in the area. The towers being proposed for Stadium Road are up to 36 storeys.

McCutcheon and hundreds of others have signed a petition demanding that the development conform to the existing land-use plan. Developers are seeking more generous allowances and provincial approval by next February.

“We’re not opposed to development, and not asking to not develop this land,” said McCutcheon. “We are asking to respect the land-use plan and to have more objectives in mind than only economic ones.”

“The development cannot be used to fund a new stadium, faculty or staff housing, contribute to the endowment and potentially the extension of rapid transit to UBC,” said McCutcheon.

The plan proposes a split of 40 per cent rental housing for university staff and faculty and 60 per cent market-rate condos.

Translation - Don't build the Broadway Extension to UBC, new housing should be added on campus instead. Also new housing on campus is too tall / dense, don't built it here.

They have always opposed the tower condos there. When one of the first ones went up years ago people freaked out that it didn't belong, that wreck beach would be ruined because people could see them from the tower etc.

Can someone explain to me the logic behind putting a soccer field on top of a one-level parkade immediately adjacent to one of the biggest bus hubs in the region? Seems like a strange land-use decision to me.. Would've been a great spot for more density.

This field used to be for annual parties like AMS Kick-Off BBQ and Year End Block Party etc. before the new student union building was built. It was also used for clubs and recreation leagues.

It's a great place for a field on campus and will be heavily used.

Also, it's not a soccer field. It's just a regular field with grass that might have some lines to divide up the space.

Well, a parkade at the location is much needed, and it is going to be built anyway. Having a soccer field on top makes a lot of sense as it will create a green roof, and the soccer field will always be well-drained for all-season play. This is better than having an underutilized roof-top parking.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad it is not a soccer field. Although, it would be nice if it was more of an urban square - with pathways, trees, and benches - rather than an empty green field. But Vancouver loves its wide lawns... Something similar to Madison Square Park in NYC would be ideal in my opinion

It's right beside the rec centre.

I have always thought that it was such a weird waste of space surrounding gage residence

Plus another 600 beds going up on east mall and Walter gage

This is fantastic! It will be great to see the area become even more strongly linked. The parking lots currently in place are such a waste.

The above link goes to the current application for the new residence to be built in the Gage parking lot area dubbed "Pacific Residence."

They have full DP submission files etc with all plans.

5 buildings in total (2 are 10 stories and 3 are 7 stories).

I'm not sure why they aren't building taller here given its directly beside the new bus exchange, future skytrain (hopefully), and the shortage in housing on campus.

True! On that note however, Robert Lee has donated tons and has gotten many of his colleagues to donate to UBC as well.

Looks good. They probably don't want to block the views from the existing Gage towers.

The design is similar to other buildings on campus like Ponderosa and Orchard. Seems like a distinct UBC style is developing. It's refreshing that it isn't all glass and spandrel. Hopefully the rest of Vancouver takes note.

Awesome to see the historical reference to the 1960s blocks - Buchanan, Chemistry addition, Hebb Theatre, etc. with the use of the light grey brick and white brick.
