NB:

Route 1: Parts are the Saint John Throughway or Mackay Highway but for the most part there's no real name.

Route 2: "The Trans-Canada". Wonder how we came up with that one. The Fredericton-Moncton section is signed "Highway of Heroes".

Route 7: Again, parts are the Vanier Highway, Welsford Bypass, Martinon Bypass etc but for the most part, nothing.

Route 8: Fredericton Bypass (or "old Trans-Canada"), Marysville Bypass, probably more up north

Route 15: Veteran's Memorial Highway

Note to eastern Canadians, we're not that fucking stupid! We know that the Yellowhead is an all western Canadian highway.

It's interesting how the highways are organized in more compact, densely-populated areas.

Here there was only a railway. After Confederation, the Trans Canada Highway was built and opened in 1966. It crosses the interior of the island and there are provincial highways that branch off it to all of the various peninsulas.



Their most commonly-used names are:

1: The T-C-H.
100: Cape Shore Highway
210: Burin Peninsula Highway
230: Discovery Trail
320: Road to the Shore
330: Gander Bay Road
340: Road to the Isles
350: Botwood Highway
360: Bay D'espoir Highway
410: Baie Verte Highway
430: Viking Trail
480: Burgeo Road
500/510: Trans-Labrador Highway

It's a pretty shitty system if you live along the south coast:



But it works for everyone else.

403 - (SW of “the Linc”) Alexander Graham Bell Parkway, (through Hamilton) Chedoke Expressway;
405 - General Brock Parkway;
407 - (privatized portion) Express Toll Route (This one honestly is a no-brainer.) :coocoo:
416 - Veterans Memorial Highway/Autoroute des Anciens Combatants;
417 - T.C.H./Route Transcanadienne, (From Highway 7 to Ottawa Road 174) The Queensway;
420 - Niagara Veterans Memorial Highway;
427 - Airport Expressway(?);
451* - Queen Elizabeth Way.
* This number’s only internally known in MTO.

3 - (up to Essex) Talbot Road;
4 - (between London and Highway 7) Richmond Street;

93 - Penetanguishene Road;
94 - (through Callander) Callander Bay Drive;
101 - (through Timmins) Algonquin Boulevard;
144 - NW Bypass, Sudbury - Timmins Road(?).

Wheeler Boulevard in Moncton, the "Four Lane" (the first in the province) from there to Shediac.

Route 10 is the "Richibucto Road" going out of Fredericton; route 102 through Gagetown is the "River Road". You don't see either of those names on maps or signs. Also hear some old-timers call route 7 though CFB Gagetown the "Broad Road" since it used to link up to the remaining Broad Road in Oromocto.

Often directions are only given by the landmarks or towns they pass through, route 3 would be "the road through Harvey", route 112 (the shortcut to Moncton before the current TCH was built) was the "Coles Island cutoff".

It's only in the past ~20 years with civic address numbering and GPS that more people around here have started using numbers to refer to highways.

Strictly speaking, the Fredericton Bypass was the first four-lane highway (and full freeway at that) in the province, in 1959, but yes I have heard "Four Lane" describe the Moncton-Shediac section.

Just to add to that long list of differing names for Ontario roads….

The portion of 4km freeway that connects London to it's eastside and the 401 has many differing labels. Some just call it Highbury Ave South, others the Highbury Expressway, some use the old pre-1991 label of HWY 126 and some, like myself, still refer to it as it's very original title, the Wenige Expressway named after a rather ecsentric mayor of the same name between 1930 to 1950.

In that case I should also include E.C Row Expressway because that used to be Highway 2, and The Queensway which used to be Highway 17 (but now Ottawa Road 174).

Never heard the 427 referred to as Airport Expressway. I would have thought that would be the name for 409.

Oh yea that’d make more sense.

Nowadays I also refer to 427-409 as the unofficial collector lanes of 401 where there’s no more room to add them.

409 used to be the Belfield Expressway but that name didn’t stick and seems to have been dropped from official usage.

I drove back from Montreal to Toronto last weekend. Exited the island via A20 rather than my usual A40 route (dropped my sister and her boyfriend at the airport on the way) and was surprised to discover that the section of A20 through Ile-Perrot is still at grade and full of traffic lights, just as it was the last time I was on that stretch of highway in the early 90s. Are there any concrete plans to finally "finish" the A20? Is there even enough land for a highway corridor through Ile-Perrot?

(1) That’s why I’ve always used 20-30-40 ever since I found out.
(2) Technically there isn’t enough land so eliminating the lights will require expropriation.
(3) I posted about this a few pages back. Let me check which number.

Thanks for finding/posting the info. Between the traffic lights and the massive construction detours at the Turcot interchange I think I'll be sticking to that 20-30-40 route from now on.
