I suspect it's just maintenance. The last renderings / model had the escalators in a wholly different location.
You can see the existing elevator retained on the left edge of this model pic.

Good grief that seems like a giant waste of money... the look is nice, but actually moving the entrance of the station? Why not just add an entrance?

Oakridge has the most fabulous, extra, little sun-hat that's probably worth half the budget for aesthetics; in other words, just an example of Translink mis-using our taxes (unless funds are coming from the Oakridge project).

As for Commercial-Broadway, I think that we are over-thinking it. IMO, both doors should open at the same time and then you let the people figure it out. In Vancouver, we are surprisingly civil and spatially more aware than other countries. I expect that people will make room for people to exit, etc. Of course Translink has an intended graphic for it all but it's really not a big deal and it will actually be extremely convenient.

I mean, it's only the second paragraph in the linked article:
Quote:
As part of the first phase of the Oakridge Centre redevelopment, Westbank and mall owner QuadReal Property Group will be rebuilding the station entrance at the southwest corner of the intersection of Cambie Street and West 41st Avenue.
Try a little harder next time to say TransLink is wasting money on a project they're not funding.

are they moving the station entrance cause new construction will be going over the old one? it looks like the building will expand out into the plaza in that render.

Haha!

I also find it amusing that people were forever (still are) complaining about how bare bones the Canada Line is, and then when a privately funded project comes around with some flare to make one of the most mundane stations on the line much more unique they reverse their tune and find new ways to complain.

It could be a means to allow an underground passage from the station to the mall.
The rezoning plans predate this version, so don't show the current underground plans.

I was going to say, It's as if they are trying to compensate for something.

Oakridge is just to relamp the head house and install bird spikes.

There have been birds roosting in the headhouse for a few weeks making a mess on the escalator handrail and wall.

Okay, thanks. That makes sense. The past few weeks I've made a point of not holding the handrail because of the bird poop.

Joyce, Commercial and Surrey have taken ages to be completed. I'm certain Surrey Central is behind schedule.

I heard there has been some Pigeon dropping issues at the new Commercial platform.

Yup, it's even reported by CBC News.

TransLink has a poopy pigeon problem on its hands at new Expo Line platform
'Pretty severe' pigeon issue at new platform is 'taxing' TransLink resources.
Rafferty Baker · CBC News · Posted: Dec 22, 2018 1:00 PM PT

The opening of a new Expo Line SkyTrain platform at Broadway and Commercial in Vancouver is still weeks away, but pigeons have already moved into the space, and they're creating a bit of a poop problem for TransLink.
[...]
Unfortunately for the platform's designers, the architecture also creates a perfect perch for pigeons — lots of pigeons — and cleaning their excrement has become a "significant issue," and daily chore.
"Pigeons are a real serious nuisance issue, and actually have operational impacts for the system," said TransLink spokesperson Chris Bryan. "Particularly at this location, it's pretty severe, so it's really taxing our resources."
[...]
The platform is expected to open early in the new year, likely before February.

i don't get this, how can a new station-house have a bird problem? is this not thought of in the design process? and if it isn't, why not?

is it too much trying to design something stunning vs realistic and for the real-world?

It’s because in most places they would cull the birds (or break any eggs they lay) but I suspect in Vancouver a small but vocal group would lose their —.

Eliminating bird issues is pretty tough in outdoor/public spaces. Hawks do eat pigeons, I'm not sure what else would get rid of them.

They use fake bird sounds in some of the train stations around here. I wonder if they are predatory bird calls or something similar that pigeons don’t like. There are many pigeons in the city parks around here but the train stations (which look perfect for roosting and are open air / easy to access for birds) don’t seem to have pigeon problems. I wonder what their secret is around here.

They tried fake bird noises at Renfrew for a while. It didn't seem to be particularly effective and attracted complaints.

Is there an ultrasonic sound that would keep birds and other pests away?

Bird spikes work but they are really ugly IMO.

Perhaps try not to reinvent something that isn't broken?

Open frame construction is cheaper and makes areas feel more spacious but creates lots of areas where only birds can reach. The big complaint about the old Expo Line stations was how enclosed everything was which in some places made everything feel small but because everything had a theme for lines and flush surfaces it meant that there were no easy places for birds to stay for long.

There seems to be some sort of ultrasonic emitter on the East end of Platform 3 at Stadium but I have never heard it operating.
