A free enterprise guy once told me "the user should pay". The tax on gas was ten or 15 cents per litre. He did not ant to pay that.

We were driving in his car along Dunsmuir. I told him.

You know, the Skytrain from Surrey, has a traffic of about 200,000 riders a day (my estimate at the time). That is about 100,000 round trips a day.

There would be (at 1.25 people per car on the commute) 80,000 more cars in downtown, clogging up the roads down which we are travelling, competing with you for every parking space, taking up your time.

You are buying some speed and peace and quiet for about 2 cents per kilometre.

He stopped short, he thought for about ten seconds and he said , "you ahve a point".

The point is that every rider we get onto RR transit (screw LRT and the horse it rode in on) is one less car in front of me, plugging up the works when I need to get somewhere.

The Langley people who now drive to work, are in your face all over the Lower Mainland. What's a few cents a litre when you get peace and quiet?

I'm pretty sure those are different circumstances. The mayor of Coquitlam didn't unilaterally demand a different technology.

Doesn't seem that big, but they probably had to assess slope stability before letting trains go by.

Twitter says that as of 2PM service was fully restored. A dumpster in the underground area went up in flames.

As of Friday evening, they're still terminating normal Millennium Line service at Commercial and running a shuttle train on the inbound track to VCC-Clark.

It looks like they've cleared the sand and mud from the track area, but they have several pumps there and what look like tarps or sandbags between the retaining wall and the track.

That area is a particularly awkward spot, because they can't easily power down the track there without also powering down the track at Commercial station, and that would require a shuttle service between Renfrew and VCC-Clark. Yesterday they waited until after revenue hours before getting crews in to start digging out the debris, they're probably just keeping an eye on it today.

Getting the track cleared is probably the easy part - the more difficult task will be to stabilize the bank to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I missed the problems this morning but I got stuck on the train this afternoon. I was going to go into downtown Van and the train stopped longer than usual at Metrotown Station (and swayed a few times, which was unnerving) before travelling to Patterson and stopping there. I waited awhile before finally giving up and walking back to the mall. Everything was fine (if a bit more crowded than usual) when I eventually got back on the train to head home.

Today started off with a tree coming down into the tracks between Braid and Sapperton, getting caught under a train, damaging the control cables at track level causing the train to time out, and getting dragged into the station when the train was driven manually. Techs spent several hours cleaning that up and patching up the control cables so that they could resume running trains.

Today continued with a tree (or possibly several) coming down into the tracks between Nanaimo and 29th Avenue, causing significant damage to one train and injuring a passenger, and leaving branches stuck under a bunch of other trains. Staff from Stadium all the way to Edmonds were having to get trains held and tracks powered down so that they could pull branches out from under the trains.

At one point this afternoon, a Christmas tree blew off someone's balcony and landed on the centre walkway between Metrotown and Royal Oak. Luckily they were able to get that off of the guideway before it cause any further damage.

Oh, there was also another small fire in the underground areas between Waterfront and Burrard, which temporarily filled the Dunsmuir tunnel with smoke again.

Due to high winds, all trains were running at reduced speed (60km/h) on all lines, and even further reduced speed over the SkyBridge.

How does Translink keep getting fires in the Dunsmuir Tunnel?

It's not in the tunnel, and I'm not even sure if it's technically TransLink property.

On either side of the guideway in that underground section between the tunnel and Waterfront station, between the fences and the buildings are empty area that are protected from weather by the road above. Because it offers protection from the weather, it's an area that attracts the homeless.

Unfortunately, if a fire starts, it's not immediately or easily noticed, it's not easy for VFRS to access it, and there's nowhere for the smoke to go except to be carried into the tunnel by the passing trains.

It is. They keep adding more fencing, and sheets of metal over the fencing, and people keep finding ways to get in. It's also a popular area for graffiti.

Because that would be considered exclusionary and discriminatory?

And a vocal SJW will find a way to make it racist or sexist or classist or something like that and get someone fired.
