On the Georgia side you can see some of the tiny rectangular glass panels have been removed from one of the cube sections.

Looks like they finished the repairs, the cube lights are on and are pretty bright.

For a moment I was worried that the crane would come down, but nope. This one is going to beat the L Tower.

I wonder how long that situation can last, given that the VC2 development across the street will also have a crane operating in the near future.

The City has replaced the small lilac trees on Seymour with alders (?) - which I think are the same as the trees under the overhang towards Georgia
- so it seems that the whole east side of the block has the same type of tree now.

WRT the crane - I'm also wondering if the office pod up top will also get a second skin?

Alders? Any pics?

Those are essentially garbage trees / weeds as far as landscaping goes. They are incredibly messy, have dull fall foliage, no real flowers in the spring, shed leaves constantly, and tend to get sick and die relatively young (hence they are first generation forest restoration trees).

Did the lilac trees perish?

That's why I put a question mark - they aren't the alder you'd see by the ditch next to the playing field.
They're similar to the only that have been on Georgia for years in front of Vancouver Centre / Scotiabank (in McMinsen's last pic above). Sort of curly twisted. It could be a type of beech (which the Vancouver street trees website says are in front of Vancouver Centre).

I don't think the lilacs died, they just were not doing well.
They were also only about 4 feet tall and would get abused by pedestrians.

AgreedThey're "weed" trees, and look drab dull, plus everything you mentioned. The only reason I can think that the city has bought so many is that they are cheap. (?)

Or maybe it has something to do about the canopy right above the trees

That's probably why they had the lilacs - shorter, smaller trees, but not hardy.
These ones will be taller than the canopy, but can be trimmed around them(?)

Maybe there's a wild beaver loose downtown that is killing them.

Good view of the new facade on Seymour (the old Telus building) from the alley behind the 753 Seymour site. Also, I've rarely seen the alley behind the Telus condo tower so empty.

They really need to add slats to the cut-out for the vents.
... and second skin the pod on the roof, to match.

I wonder if Telus had to pay the owner of the Avigilon Building to post that banner in the alley?

Walked past the alley last night and noticed that the lanterns seem to be in richer colours now and they've been re-installed right down to Robson
- looks better than the washed out colours before.
